Thought I would share with you an amazing hours observation tonight, Sunday 21st September. Between 20:15 and 21:15, I saw fourteen satellites traverse an

Eventually, independent satellites are going to have to go. Since space elevators are going to benefit humankind much more than those satellites, what legal mechanism will be used to condemn them? Would offering space on a few platforms appease the satellite owners?

Hi, I was poking around the net, trying to find out how many communications satellites are in geostationary orbit in the proposed area of the space elevator off the coast of Ecudor. On page 14 of "The Space Elevator", the anchor point is described as being 2000 km west of Ecudor.

This topic got considerable discussion in 2004, but not much consensus. If one of many SE breaks in multiple pieces, one or none of the pieces will be in GEO orbit, but may orbit such that it comes closer than 100 kilometers at least occasionally.

Print Page - Moving Ribbon: Initial Deployment
I've thought about this a bit more for a ribbon loop that is long enough to not have a counterweight. The newly deployed minimum sized loop would have to be designed to (obviously) be long enough to hold itself up, which means that there must be a tension at the anchor of greater than zero.
