Nov 20, 2009 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
20 November 2009 - Norwegian web browser technology developer Opera Software ASA (OSL: OPERA) said today it has renewed two agreements with US group Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) to integrate Google as default search engine in Opera browsers.
Under the first deal, Google will be included as search engine on Opera's mobile web browsers Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. The contract replaces the deal, which the companies signed in February 2008 and runs through October 2011. The term can be extended to 30 October 2012.
At the same time, Opera has signed a contract extension for Google as the default search engine in the Opera desktop browser by 31 March 2012. The deal covers all language versions of the browser.

Google Inc. on Thursday announced that video clips on YouTube, the popular video-sharing website it bought in 2006, will soon include machine-generated automatic captions.
The automatic captions will be added for videos through the combination of Google's automatic speech recognition technology with the YouTube caption system.
In addition to automatic captions, Google said it is adding another feature called "auto-timing," which enables YouTube users to create a simple text file with all the words in a video, leaving Google technology to figure out when the words are spoken and create corresponding captions.
Both features will be available in English by the end of this week with automatic captions initially visible only on a handful of YouTube's partner channel, Google said.
"We hope to expand these features for other channels and languages in the future," Ken Harrenstien, a deaf Google software engineer, wrote in a posting on the company's blog.
Captions in videos not only help the deaf and hearing impaired, but can also improve search and even enable users to jump to the exact parts of the videos they're looking for, Harrenstien noted.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 19, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
Google Inc. on Thursday offered the first glimpse of Chrome OS, a new personal computer operating system being developed by the Internet search giant.
While making demonstrations at an event held at the company's headquarters in Mountain View, California, Google vice president of product management Sundar Pichai said the Chrome OS will be available to consumers a year later.
He said Google will work with manufacturers to bring Chrome OS netbooks to the market before next year's holiday season.
According to Google, the netbooks or mini-laptop computers will have specified hardware components such as solid-state hard drives to create the fastest experience for the new operating system.
The company also announced that it is open-sourcing the code of Chrome OS from Thursday, saying "the code is free, accessible to anyone and open for contributions."
Google has touted speed, simplicity and security as the key aspects of the new software, which is seen as a move by the company to challenge Microsoft Corp.'s dominance in the operating system market.
In Thursday's demonstrations, Google engineers showed how the Chrome OS can start up a computer in seconds and perform various tasks in the web browser.
The Chrome OS represents a "fundamentally different model of computing," Google's group product manager Caesar Sengupta and engineering director Matt Papakipos wrote Thursday in a posting on the company's blog.
"All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs," they said.

TOKYO, Nov 19, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
Google Inc. has begun stepping up efforts in the Japanese market to promote cloud computing and its cloud-based software and services for businesses.
The Google Apps suite includes a range of tools, typified by Gmail, that firms can use to send and share information. In Japan, it is licensed to companies at a price of 6,000 yen (US$879) per employee per year. Firms that have opted to run their businesses on Google Apps include movie distributor Shochiku Co. (TSE:9601) and D&M Holdings Inc., owner of the Denon and Marantz audiovisual equipment brands. All Nippon Airways Co. (TSE:9202) recently introduced Google's map-related service.
To further promote use of cloud computing and Google Apps among companies of all sizes in Japan, Google intends to double the number of firms with which it has reseller agreements. It now has around 30 such agreements, having recently added Ricoh Co. (TSE:7752), and aims to increase them to more than 60 in fiscal 2010.
Advertising on its search engine service is still the major source of profits for Google, but establishing its cloud business as another pillar of revenues is a long-term strategic goal.
