SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Nov 23, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business unit of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that BIG Wireless, a member of Motorola's award-winning channel program and leader in design, deployment and maintenance of carrier-class, end-to-end, wireless infrastructure solutions, has deployed a citywide wireless broadband network in Altoona, Penn. The wireless network combines Motorola's field-proven mesh wide area network (MWAN) and point-to-multipoint technologies to deliver reliable and secure public safety wireless broadband access and support for mobility applications used by the City's fire, police, codes and public works departments.
"It's an exciting time and a great step forward for the City," said Mayor Wayne Hippo, City of Altoona. "This technology effectively puts more police into the public, allows for more efficient use of time in codes and inspections and will increase the safety of our firemen. It is well worth the investment."
"This was an extremely long process but, in the end, well worth it. We carefully evaluated all of the technologies available and determined that Motorola's product met all of our needs for security, mobility and most importantly future growth," said Victor Curfman, IT manager, City of Altoona. "Today, we have a network that will allow our first responders and mobile employees to have immediate access to critical data as well as be much more efficient. I am confident we made the right decision in working with Motorola and BIG Wireless."
Motorola's solution provides the bandwidth and capacity needed to support Altoona's current initiatives while also offering the flexibility to introduce future applications. Initially, the network will be used by the Altoona Police and Fire Departments for Internet access and high-speed mobile access to a wide range of applications. The Police Department initially will use the wireless network for access to the Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET), Informant reporting software, field reporting and mapping applications, with plans to add computer-aided dispatch applications in the future. The Altoona Fire Department will also use the wireless network to access Firehouse reporting software, building plans, property and mapping systems, as well as Hazmat systems, with future plans for rip-and-run and mobile inspection applications. Public service officials will also benefit from the new citywide network. For example, city code officers will have mobile access to city permitting, property and mapping systems while bridge inspectors will have access to the statewide reporting system anywhere in the city. Altoona Water Authority personnel will also have access to internal mapping and water/sewer line databases when out in the field.
"BIG Wireless is proud to help forward-thinking cities like Altoona find solutions that help increase efficiencies, reduce operating costs and improve public safety," said John Dolmetsch, chief technical officer, BIG Wireless. "The city's fire and police departments as well as other city agencies and services will all experience the benefits of this technology initiative."
Altoona's wireless broadband network consists of Motorola MWAN 4300 Series intelligent access points providing coverage over the entire city area. To meet the challenges of the city's demanding multi-use network, the solution consists of a two-radio configuration - each access point houses a 2.4 GHz WiFi radio (802.11 b/g) and an additional 4.9 GHz licensed band radio for public safety applications. Motorola's MWAN 4300 intelligent access points leverage the field-proven MeshConnex(TM) routing engine and One Point Wireless Manager element management system, creating a self-forming, self-healing wireless broadband network that blankets the city. The intelligent access points work in conjunction with Motorola's PMP 400 Series wireless broadband access network solution, which provides backhaul and ensures reliable and secure transport of data traffic between the city's neighborhoods and the core of the network.
"Cities are quickly recognizing the benefits that wireless broadband technologies offer, from unmatched flexibility to lower deployment costs and improved productivity," said Scott French, MSSI vice president and senior sales director for Emerging Technologies & Solutions, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. "The deployment in Altoona is a great example of how Motorola and its partners are helping municipalities take advantage of the latest networking technologies to enhance city services and better protect the public."
Motorola delivers seamless connectivity that puts real-time information in the hands of users, which gives customers the agility they need to grow their business or better serve and protect the public. Working seamlessly together with its world-class devices, Motorola's unrivaled wireless network solutions include indoor wireless LAN, outdoor wireless mesh, point-to-multipoint, point-to-point networks and voice-over-WLAN solutions. Combined with powerful software tools for wireless network design, best-of-breed security, management and troubleshooting, Motorola's solutions deliver trusted networking and access anywhere to organizations across the globe.
