Live cattle opened steady and traded both sides of unchanged before settling lower for the day. Financial markets were initially lower, yet recovered by midday. Today’s fundamental news was the light trade in KS and TX at $87.50 compared to last week’s trade at $88.

Live cattle closed sharply higher on account of late fund buying as well as locals short covering. The financial markets bounced higher today and thus helped live cattle move higher as well. June and Aug cattle filled yesterday gap lower keeping my optimism for these months.

Last week cash cattle traded $1-3 higher. Cash this week will be difficult to post gains again because packer margins are still poor. The spread between choice and select has been strengthening and this has been one of our key bullish signals to watch.
