HOT SPRINGS, Ark., Nov 06, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
The Hot Springs Intermediate School, located in Hot Springs, Arkansas, may appear to be an everyday, two-story school. But in taking a closer look at the aluminum, glass and brick building it is apparent that there is much more to the building than meets the eye.
Sustainability was a key factor in creating the new school. It was important that the Intermediate School incorporate solutions that help provide a healthy, productive learning environment, such as increased daylighting and improved energy efficiency. To help achieve natural lighting, products from Alcoa's Kawneer architectural aluminum products business were selected to help increase the durability, sustainability and energy efficiency of the school. The new school, now occupied by approximately 700 students, is spacious and features an open floor plan with natural light throughout.
Challenges for Kawneer
-- The School District had strict energy requirements; therefore energy efficiency was essential to the project.
-- Many of the classrooms in the new school faced west, which was not ideal for energy efficiency or daylighting.
-- To fit the needs of a growing student body, the new facility needed to be durable and able to handle heavy traffic.
Kawneer Solutions
-- To meet the energy and lighting needs of the school while keeping within the project's budget and design guidelines, a combination of Kawneer's 1600 SunShade(R) and custom sunshades were used to help control glare and maximize natural light during the school day.
-- For additional thermal and performance options, Kawneer's versatile Trifab(R) VG 451T Storefront Framing was selected. The building also incorporates a geo-thermal heating system and an insulated building envelope. Additionally, extra insulation was integrated into the roof to exceed the energy code. Entrance vestibules also featured sloped glazing to allow for increased natural light to enter the building.
-- For durability, Kawneer 350 Medium Stile Entrances were used. This entrance package, composed of a door, door frame and hardware, is designed specifically for high traffic areas such as school entrances, and makes a good, aesthetic impression, while simultaneously withstanding the rigors of constant use. To provide heightened security, Kawneer's Paneline(R) Exit Devices, which offer total access control, were installed on the entrances to the facility.
Other Design Highlights
The site that the school district selected for the new facility was adjacent to the old building and fairly small in size. To compensate for the small building site, local architectural firm Douglas A. Arnold and Associates was required to go from a one-story design to a two-story plan. A greenhouse, incorporated into the design as a part of its science curriculum, features a skylight that provides smooth appearance and helps minimize heat loss and condensation. The combination of the building's green features and modern teaching facilities, which includes a separate physical education building and auditorium, as well as an elaborate arts wing, helped make Hot Springs Intermediate School state-of-the-art.

NEW YORK, Nov 04, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today that it is partnering with The Prince's Rainforests Project (PRP), an environmental initiative started by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to protect the rainforests and tackle climate change. Alcoa joins with corporate, NGOs and other groups to support Prince Charles' action to protect rainforests in advance of the international climate change meeting hosted by the United Nations in Copenhagen this December.
Alcoa is aligned with and supports the Prince's Rainforests Project's dedication to further understanding that rainforests are critical for the planet's survival as they regulate rainfall, preserve biodiversity, and store vast amounts of carbon.
"Alcoa is committed to delivering on both the business efficiency and the stewardship of the Amazon region," said Frank Feder, Alcoa Vice President and President, Latin America and Caribbean. Feder oversaw the development of the Juruti Project, part of an Alcoa $2.2 billion investment in Brazil, which includes a mine, port and railroad in the Amazon.
"When we began this project, we declared that we will mine bauxite and return the area to the same, if not better, condition that when we initially arrived. We believe no amount of deforestation is acceptable and revegetation is the key. We will plant 15 million trees over 50 years to ensure that mined areas will be totally revegetated with native species," Feder explained.
In addition to the revegetation of the area, Alcoa is aiding the sustainable development of the Juruti region, including supporting infrastructure projects such as hospitals, schools, roads and water wells, and investing in the people of Juruti through training programs.
"At Alcoa, we're proud to be part of The Prince's Rainforests Project as a positive example of sustainable development in the rainforest," Feder said.
The PRP launched its Rainforest SOS campaign on September 30, 2009. The campaign will culminate at a major rainforest event to be hosted by Prince Charles in November. This event will include key leaders, NGO directors and leading figures from the business community.

About The Prince's Rainforests Project
The Prince's Rainforests Project (PRP) was established in October 2007 by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to develop consensus as to how the rate of rainforest destruction might be slowed. Tropical deforestation is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions and without tackling this problem it may be impossible to avoid catastrophic climate change. The PRP is working with governments, international businesses and non-profit organizations to find a solution. To learn more visit http://www.rainforestsos.org/

CLEVELAND, Nov 05, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today that funding has been approved for the complete repair and refurbishment of its 50,000-ton forging press at the company's Cleveland Works.
The project will make Cleveland Works the world's premier producer of large aluminum and titanium forgings for the defense, aerospace and industrial markets.
"This could not have happened without the support of our employees, community leaders and leadership of United Auto Workers Local 1050," said William F. Christopher, Alcoa executive vice president and president of Alcoa Engineered Products and Solutions. "When this project is completed, Cleveland Works will be the home of the most advanced, productive large forging presses in the world."
Combined with earlier approved investments to support production of the F35 Joint Strike Fighter and other efficiency projects, Alcoa plans to invest more than $110 million in Cleveland Works through 2011.
The press project will be completed by the end of 2011. It will involve the complete disassembly and renovation of the 50,000-ton press, a 92-foot structure -- with four stories above and below the floor -- that began production in 1955. In August of 2008, cracks were discovered in the press' base castings. Alcoa idled the press to assess the situation and, after consulting with world experts, elected to pursue a complete refurbishment.
Cleveland Works is the home of two large forging presses -- the 50,000-ton press under renovation and a 35,000-ton press currently producing large forgings for aerospace applications, such as the aluminum bulkheads for the Joint Strike Fighter.
"With a renovated press, our unique alloys, proprietary segmented die technology and signature stress relief, Cleveland Works will be unmatched," Christopher said. "We will now combine our industry leading technology and market expertise with twice the capacity to serve markets with strong growth opportunities."
Segmented die technology and signature stress relief allow Alcoa to make parts that are larger, thicker and more complex than can be produced by competitors on similar-sized forging presses.
Earlier, Alcoa's board approved interim funding to allow engineering and early lead time commitments to proceed. The board's recent action commits the balance of the funding for the project. Alcoa's investment will include more than $68 million in the press rebuild, alongside $24 million previously approved for other improvements associated with Joint Strike Fighter production. The project is also supported by a package of economic development incentives from the state of Ohio, city of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, village of Cuyahoga Heights and city of Independence.
"We are very grateful to our community partners for their confidence in this project," Christopher said. "Our revitalized press capacity will allow the continued presence of manufacturing operations in Cuyahoga County and provide continued growth and good jobs for years to come at Cleveland Works."
