Alcoa (AA) NewsBite - Alcoa Down on Profit Concerns - Zibb.com
Jul 01, 2008 (Fresh Brewed Media via COMTEX) --
Alcoa Inc. (AA) opened at 35.28. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 33.72 and a high of 35.52. AA is now trading at 34.16, down 1.46 (-4.14%). The stock hit its 52 week high of 48.77 in July and set its 52 week low of 26.69 in January. AA has been generally higher for the past year. Shares of aluminum producers have been tumbling along with the broader market investors feared that fallout from record crude oil prices will hurt corporate profits and increase the impact of credit losses in the financial sector. Technical indicators for the stock are bullish but deteriorating while S&P gives AA a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating. If you're looking for a hedged play on this stock, consider an October bear-call credit spread above the $47.50 range. AA stock could rise up to 39.1% before expiration and this position would still be profitable.

Alcoa downgraded to neutral at Merrill Lynch on recent run-up - Zibb.com
BOSTON, May 22, 2008 (Thomson Financial via COMTEX) --
Alcoa Inc. was downgraded Thursday to neutral from buy at Merrill Lynch, which said shares have risen recently because of take-out speculation - a good opportunity, the brokerage said, to take money off the table.
The stock has run up about 20% since the beginning of May.
"We still are believers in the aluminum story," Merrill Lynch analyst David Lipschitz said, "but note Alcoa's relatively muted leverage to commodity price movement."
The firm said investors should now turn their attention to Alcoa's ability to bring earnings to the bottom line. Merrill Lynch said to pay attention to the company's flat-rolled products segment, which is sensitive to the North American and European industrial climate, while the engineered products and solutions segment is exposed to construction activity and automotive and heavy truck build rates.
"Weakness in these areas should weigh on Alcoa's performance," Merrill Lynch said. "Also, Alcoa has execution risk in terms of turning around performance at its Russian flat-rolled operations."
Shares of Alcoa, a Pittsburgh-based aluminum producer and component of the Dow Jones Industrials, closed Wednesday at $41.70. Greg Saulnier gs/pc
