BlackRock: Core inflation rates in developed economies stable - Zibb.com
HONG KONG, Jun 10, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
Investment management firm BlackRock said Tuesday that the core inflation rates in major developed economies had been more stable in spite of the recent oil price hike, which had sparked wide inflation concerns.
"We see no evidence of a significant spill over (from current oil price of above 120 U.S. dollars a barrel) into consumer and producer prices," Bob Doll, vice chairman and chief investment officer for global equities at BlackRock, told a press conference in Hong Kong.
Doll said he had not seen a wage/price spiral in most major developed economies, although high food and energy prices have pushed up the headline inflation rates around the world and that the emerging markets had been facing more inflation pressure.
International oil price was likely to stay within the range between 120 U.S. dollars and 140 U.S. dollars a barrel in some time ahead, as it had done recently, he said.
"We expect inflationary pressures in the United States to diminish in the months ahead, particularly since the credit squeeze and housing bust are both deflationary forces, and since the economy continues to operate below potential," he said.
Doll said BlackRock remained "cautiously optimistic" about the world stock market outlook and that the economic backdrop in the United States will not harm the long term prospects for equities, although there maybe volatility in the short term.
He refuted the recession argument by saying that there had been no spikes in unemployment and collapsing profit margins seen in the U.S. economy, although the labor market had been under strain and the housing market was probably still in trouble.
"A recession connotes more than just a contraction in gross domestic product," he said, noting that non-financial corporate sector has continued to perform well and a re-normalization was being seen in the credit markets.
"Our overall view is that the economic growth slowdown is probably at its worst point and that prospects for future growth may improve. The current economic backdrop should provide a basis for (U.S.) stock prices to grind higher, but not without continued volatility," he said.
Asia is in a strong position to withstand a global economic slowdown and China is in transition to a more sustainable economic growth model and changing from a capital importer to a capital exporter, he added.
