Ciena Corp. (CIEN) NewsBite - Zibb.com
Apr 25, 2008 (Fresh Brewed Media via COMTEX) --
Ciena New (NasdaqNM: CIEN) closed yesterday at $34.73. So far the stock has hit a 52-week low of $21.40 and 52-week high of $49.55. Ciena New stock has been showing support around 33.12 and resistance in the 36.00 range. Technical indicators for the stock are Bullish and S&P gives CIEN a positive 4 STAR (out of 5) buy rating. For a hedged play on this stock, look at an Oct '08 35 covered call (EUQ JG) for a net debit in the $30.13 area. That is also the break even stock price for this trade. This covered call has a 176 day duration, provides 13.25% downside protection and a 16.16% assigned return rate for a 33.52% annualized return rate (comparison purposes only). A lower cost hedged play for this stock would use a longer term call option in place of the covered call stock purchase. To use this strategy look at going long the CIEN Jan '09 25 Call (VCB AE) and selling the Oct '08 35 call (EUQ JG) for a $7.60 debit. The trade has a 176 day life and would provide 6.13% downside protection and a 31.58% assigned return rate for a 65.00% annualized return rate (for comparison purposes only). Ciena New does not pay dividends at this time.

Embarq selects Ciena's CN 4200 FlexSelect advanced services platform - Zibb.com
Apr 29, 2008 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) --
Ciena, a supplier of networking equipment, has announced that communications services provider Embarq, has selected its CN 4200 FlexSelect advanced services platform for deployment throughout its network.
According to Ciena, the solution will support the aggregation and transport of a variety of residential and business services. Embarq is installing the Ciena CN 4200 platform across its service territories. Currently, more than 100 nodes have been deployed.
According to Ciena, its CN 4200 platform has the ability to increase bandwidth to handle growing capacity demands. In addition, the platform is capable of carrying multiple types of voice, video and data traffic, eliminating the need for additional equipment.
Jim Hansen, senior vice president of network services at Embarq, said: "Our promise to customers is to offer practical, innovative solutions for their communications needs. This deployment gives us the added bandwidth we need to fulfill that promise within our current capital program."

Embarq To Increase Bandwidth With Ciena Platform - Zibb.com
Apr 30, 2008 (financialwire.net via COMTEX) --
April 30, 2008 (FinancialWire) Embarq (NYSE: EQ) (Current Market Cap: US$6.09 Bil.) is deploying a platform from Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN) that adds bandwidth without the high cost of burying additional cable.
The new platform will be available in about 18 states, according to a spokesman. As businesses use applications that require increasing amounts of bandwidth, the platform enables Embarq to handle larger demands.
The move will give Embarq the ability to provide businesses with high speed data applications.
Embarq did not reveal the cost of the system used to increase bandwidth, but said that it is much less expensive than the method of burying cables is.

Next Inning Technology Updates Outlooks for Ciena, Harmonic, Intel, and Advanced Micro Devices -
PRINCETON, N.J., June 9, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Next Inning Technology Research (http://www.nextinning.com), a subscription service focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has updated outlooks for Ciena (Nasdaq: CIEN), Harmonic (Nasdaq: HLIT), Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD).
In a series of reports released in March, Editor Paul McWilliams advised readers it was time to buy specific tech stocks. All of his selections have gone up considerably with one very near doubling. Now sitting on handsome profits, what does McWilliams think investors should do: Add to positions on strength, hedge or take some profits? Well, according to him, that depends on which of the dozen or so stocks you're talking about. To read his updated thoughts and enjoy a 21-day free trial of Next Inning, please click the following link:

In response to member inquiries, McWilliams wrote: "Ruiz led Motorola in the late 1990s. During that three-year stint, which included a period when there was a very healthy demand atmosphere for semis, Ruiz tried several times to restructure the Motorola semi division. In my view, these efforts were..."
McWilliams also looks at these topics:
-- Has the market been too hard on Ciena following its recent earnings
report? Is the stock a good value at current prices?
-- What is Harmonics' motivation for selling Fujitsu encoders?
McWilliams advised readers to buy Harmonics earlier this year when it
dipped below $8. Does he think it's time to take some profits?
-- What does McWilliams think the chances are for AMD to develop a
meaningful edge against Intel?
-- Does McWilliams think Intel continues to merit what he calls a "Core
Four" status?
Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 250% since its inception versus 91% for the Nasdaq.
