Supermarket chain Daiei has cut its net profit outlook for the year ending 29 February, blaming it on lower profit margins caused by price competition and higher costs from store shutdowns. The company now expects to report a net profit of 38bn, compared with an earlier forecast of 48bn yen.

Japan's Daiei FY net profit falls 79 pct on competition, lower unit contribution - Zibb.com

Japanese supermarket chain operator Daiei Inc. reported on Friday a 79 percent fall in net profit for the fiscal first quarter ended May 29 due to fierce price competition and lower contributions from its credit card subsidiary, OMC Card Inc.

Daiei posted net profit of 2.12 billion yen ($19.8 million), down from 10.23 billion yen a year earlier.

Operating profit tumbled 69.2 percent to 2.67 billion yen as revenue dropped 12.8 percent to 257.07 trillion yen, due to the deconsolidation of OMC Card.

Daiei said that if it eliminated the effect of the deconsolidation of the card unit, its operating profit would have been the same level as last year's.

For the full year to February 2009, Daiei said it expects operating profit of 18.0 billion yen and net profit of 4.0 billion yen on revenue of 1.05 trillion yen, in line with the previous forecasts.

The supermarket operator also expects to post first-half net profit of 2 billion yen, operating profit of 7 billion yen and revenue of 523 billion yen, in line with the earlier guidance.
