From May 2003 to September 2004, Rothwell was President and Chief Executive Officer of Sanofi-Synthelabo, Inc. and was instrumental in the formation of Sanofi-aventis U.S. in 2004. Prior to that, from June 1998 to May 2003, he served in various capacities at Pharmacia, including as President of the company's Global Prescription Business.

Emisphere is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the improved delivery of therapeutic molecules or nutritional supplements using its proprietary Eligen Technology.
