FDA Delaying Further Trials Of Geron Corp.'s Stem Cell Treatment (GERN) - Zibb.com

8/18/2009 - Geron Corp. (NASDAQ:GERN) said Tuesday that regulators are delaying a trial of GRNOPC1, an embryonic stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury. The FDA is reviewing new data of the therapy from studies on animals, which will delay the company in testing it on humans. The company said that they were not sure how long the review would take but planned to work on it with the FDA and begin testing afterwards. Geron said that it has tested the product in 24 separate studies involving rats and mice. The FDA cleared human testing earlier in the year and the company has focused on studying different doses of the stem cell treatment as well as testing it against other neurodegenerative diseases. Geron plans to recruit about 8 to 10 patients who recently became paraplegics. The patients will be injected with the GRNOPC1 within 2 weeks of their injury and the company will monitor the safety of the treatment and will look for signs of improvement in sensation and movement.

Geron Corp. Said Animals Treated With GRNOPC1 Developed Spinal Cysts (GERN) - Zibb.com

8/27/2009 - Geron Corp. (NASDAQ:GERN) said Thursday that some animals treated with its embryonic stem cell product have developed microscopic spinal cysts. The company is testing GRNOPC1 for spinal cord injury and has been testing it on rats and mice in hopes to begin human clinical trials soon. The FDA is delaying the program due to the new data from the animal studies. Neither the company nor the FDA said how long the review will take. The company said, "A very low frequency of injected animals developed microscopic cysts in the regenerating injury site," and added that the cysts were harmless, were not spreading, and were not connected to increased risk of death or health problems. Geron said as many as half of all spinal cord injury patients develop much larger cysts.
