CNX Gas Presents Check to West Greene School District - Zibb.com
WAYNESBURG, Pa., Nov 14, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
CNX Gas Corporation (NYSE: CXG) presented a check in the amount of $8,500.00 to West Greene School District this morning. The money represents the value of the electricity generated during the first full year of operation of a micro-turbine project undertaken by CNX Gas, CONSOL Energy Inc. (CNX Gas majority shareholder) and Ingersoll Rand Energy Systems. Last January, a micro-turbine unit (a small, mobile electricity generator) was installed at CONSOL's Bailey Mine to recover coalmine methane liberated directly from the underground workings of the mine and then used to generate electricity. Use of this unit is recovering an otherwise lost resource and will help to curb greenhouse gas and carbon emissions. The project was the first of its kind in the world.

Accepting on behalf of the district was Thelma Szarell, Superintendent of West Greene School District. "We would like to use these funds to provide to our students at all levels (K-12) the opportunity to experience virtual field trips. These field trips enable students the opportunity to make real world connections to classroom learning. It is a way to integrate technology, meet the needs of diverse learners, and help accomplish the objectives of planned lessons," said Ms. Szarell. She continued by saying, "Part of the money will also be used to purchase library books for the students at Springhill-Freeport Elementary School since we feel it is still very important to be able to get books in the hands of our students at a young age."
Nicholas J. DeIuliis, president and chief executive officer of CNX Gas, had a few words to say about the micro-turbine project, "We've been able to demonstrate that this unit is an innovative way to harvest and use a greenhouse gas which would normally be vented into the atmosphere." He continued by saying that if the economic evaluation is positive, this technology can be applied in coalfields either in isolated areas which may lack access to electricity transmission lines or at individual commercial power generation sites. "The success of a project such as this has many positive environmental implications, and today I'm very happy to see that West Greene School District was able to realize some economic benefits as well."
J. Brett Harvey, CONSOL Energy president and chief executive officer, echoed Mr. DeIuliis' thoughts, "CONSOL Energy is pleased with the performance and potential application of the Micro turbine technology." He continued by saying that demand for electricity is anticipated to grow during the next decades and such clean power technology will help to meet that demand while controlling emissions of greenhouse gases.
"Our goal is to be a major stakeholder in such projects to ensure the environmentally sound and efficient use of coal, methane gas and alternative fuels. And the fact that we were able to pass along the savings in electricity costs to benefit the West Greene School District is an added benefit of the efficiency of this technology."
CNX GAS CORPORATION is an independent natural gas exploration, development, production and gathering company operating in the Appalachian and Illinois basins of the United States. CNX Gas is the leading Appalachian gas producer, by revenue, and believes it is the number one capturer of methane in the energy industry. CNX Gas recently joined the Chicago Climate Exchange as an offset provider and was named a finalist in two categories by the Platts in their 10th annual Global Energy Awards and was also Pittsburgh Technology Council's Tech 50 Awards.
