Red Hat Expands Opportunities for Most Demanding Mission-Critical Platforms - Zibb.com

Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced momentum in support for high-end workloads on Linux with the expansion of its Advanced Mission-Critical Program offering for customers. Long-time Red Hat partner Hitachi Ltd., a leading global electronics company with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, has joined the Advanced Mission-Critical Program and will offer expanded services for mission-critical customers in Japan in collaboration with Red Hat.

Red Hat announced the Advanced Mission-Critical Program in November 2008, combining substantially enhanced service levels with the proven advantages of Linux for workloads previously only thought to be supported on more expensive legacy platforms. The worldwide program was designed to deliver unprecedented services levels, support and decade-long product lifecycles for participating Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. Benefits offered by the program include reduced operating costs, reduced acquisition costs and exceptional availability for mission-critical customers.

"Red Hat's Advanced Mission-Critical Program is designed to enable customers to reduce costs while providing the reliability, availability and scalability needed for the most demanding mission-critical applications. We are pleased to announce Hitachi's participation in this program, extending the benefits of Linux to an even greater number of customers," said Scott Crenshaw, vice president, Platform Business Unit at Red Hat. "Hitachi joins the Advanced Mission-Critical Program in providing Red Hat Enterprise Linux to critical workloads throughout Japan."

As a Red Hat Advanced Mission-Critical partner, Hitachi is now able to provide new support options to high-end customers with mission-critical needs leveraging Red Hat Enterprise Linux in Japan. These expanded Red Hat Enterprise Linux support options include a 10-year life cycle, the ability to standardize on a single update release for up to 18 months and proactive notification to reduce system disruption.

"To support the needs of the most demanding, mission-critical workloads, such as for maintaining our social infrastructure platforms, wide experience with and specialized knowledge for mainframe-class systems are the key," said Daisuke Sasaki, general manager, Hitachi, Ltd. "In joining Red Hat's Advanced Mission-Critical Program, we combine Hitachi's mainframe expertise and Red Hat's Enterprise Linux expertise to provide enhanced services to customers. We believe that these new support options will bring greater benefit to mission-critical customers in Japan."

Hitachi High-Technologies to Buy Business from Renesas - Zibb.com

Hitachi High-Technologies and Renesas Technology announced a basic agreement for the transfer of the semiconductor manufacturing equipment business of Renesas subsidiary Renesas Eastern Japan Semiconductor to Hitachi High-Tech Instruments, a subsidiary of Hitachi High-Technologies.

Scheduled for next spring, this business transfer is expected to enhance Hitachi High-Technologies' semiconductor manufacturing equipment business and improve management efficiency, the company said.

Renesas Eastern Japan Semiconductor is currently charged with the development and manufacture of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, with Hitachi High-Technologies largely responsible for global sales of these products. However, both Hitachi High-Technologies and Renesas have acknowledged that the integrated management of development through to manufacturing, sales and services pertaining to semiconductor manufacturing equipment is the most desirable option going forward. This recognition applies not only to the ability to respond flexibly to the changing market environment in recent years, further business structure enhancements, and improved management efficiency, but also to efforts to accelerate the development of new products that reflect customer needs.

With this latest business transfer, Hitachi High-Technologies said it aims to establish and strengthen its business base in the semiconductor back-end process equipment business, where market expansion is widely anticipated. Specifically, the transfer will see Renesas Eastern Japan Semiconductor as the absorbed company, with Hitachi High-Tech Instruments as the surviving company. Through synergies with technological and development capabilities honed by Hitachi High-Tech Instruments in the surface mount systems and semiconductor manufacturing equipment businesses over the years, Hitachi High-Technologies said it will strive to expand business by bringing even more products to market.

Renesas, for its part, said it is pursuing various measures targeting its production structure, employee resource optimization, and other areas with the goal of improving and enhancing a stable management base - one capable of securing profits even under the adverse business climate that has emerged since last year. The business transfer represents an important decision for Renesas in terms of promoting effective resource utilization for the enhancement of its core competency, the microcontroller business. In pursuing the swift completion of a variety of similar measures going forward, Renesas is determined to realize a more stable management base and a stronger business base for its own operations.

GE Applauds US-UAE Civilian Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement - Zibb.com

GE applauds the U.S.-United Arab Emirates (UAE) civilian nuclear energy cooperation agreement that recently earned congressional approval. Commonly known as a "123 Agreement," this pact is legally required to allow U.S. companies to provide reactor technologies, fuel and nuclear energy services to other countries for civilian energy production.

GE has actively supported the historic U.S.-UAE agreement, which has been praised for its non-proliferation provisions that create a model for other countries in the region and around the world that are aspiring to address rising energy demands with clean-air nuclear energy.

"We applaud this landmark agreement, which marks a historic moment in the future development of civilian nuclear energy in the UAE and the region," said Jack Fuller, president and CEO of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), the global nuclear energy alliance formed by GE and Hitachi. "The UAE has shown strong leadership demonstrating the role nuclear energy plays in a diverse energy portfolio to address growing domestic demands for clean and cost-effective power generation for generations to come."

The agreement is the latest step as the UAE moves forward with the development of its national civil nuclear energy program. The UAE recently put into place a law establishing the regulatory framework for a civilian nuclear energy program.

The UAE's domestic power demand is expected to increase to more than 40,000 MW by 2020. The country's rapid economic development has stretched existing energy resources, and nuclear energy can help fill the electricity demand gap with cost-effective power.

GEH is a world-leading provider of advanced boiling water reactor technology and power plant services for scores of nuclear power stations around the world. Globally, dozens of new nuclear reactors are being constructed, adding to the 441 reactors currently operating in 31 countries, delivering 17 percent of worldwide electricity production. Global energy demand is expected to increase 44 percent by 2030, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Nuclear energy is a safe, affordable and virtually carbon-free energy solution.

GE has been a strong partner of the UAE and an active participant in the country's infrastructure growth for the past 40 years. Today, GE has six facilities and more than 600 employees throughout the UAE, supporting the growth of numerous sectors, including power, water, oil and gas, industrial, aviation, healthcare, finance, media and entertainment sectors. GE also is engaged in knowledge sharing and learning initiatives in the UAE, reflecting its continued commitment to the country and the region.

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy

Based in Wilmington, N.C., GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) is a world-leading provider of advanced reactors and nuclear services. Established in June 2007, GEH is a global nuclear alliance created by GE and Hitachi to serve the global nuclear industry. The nuclear alliance executes a single, strategic vision to create a broader portfolio of solutions, expanding its capabilities for new reactor and service opportunities. The alliance offers customers around the world the technological leadership required to effectively enhance reactor performance, power output and safety.

G-Technology by Hitachi Doubles Capacity Across 3.5-Inch Product Line - Zibb.com

G-Technology by Hitachi (www.g-technology.com), a leading provider of premium storage solutions for the Mac, creative pro and high-end audio/video (AV) markets, today announced that it is incorporating Hitachi's 2TB, 7,200 RPM, 32MB cache buffer hard drives across its entire 3.5-inch product line. Now with capacities ranging from 2TB to 32TB, G-Tech's new upgraded single-drive and ultra-fast, low-cost RAID systems include the G-DRIVE, G-SAFE, G-RAID, G-SPEED eS, G-SPEED eS Pro, G-SPEED eS PRO XL, and G-SPEED FC XL. With the addition of these new drives, G-Tech is now the only external storage provider in the world with a complete line of 2TB, 7,200 RPM drive-based, external storage solutions specifically designed for the Mac and AV markets.

Hitachi's G-Technology-branded solutions offer performance, reliability and capacity that are needed for today's video editors, graphic designers, photographers and other digital media professionals. Because these professionals demand tons of storage headroom and massive data throughput for editing, cutting, layering and rendering high definition (HD) content, G-Tech uses nothing but the best hard drives and fastest interfaces--eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB 2.0, mini SAS and Fibre Channel. For those who want to upgrade to new G-Tech 2TB-based solutions, this could mean the difference between storing approximately 84 hours of 1080i HDV on a 1TB drive to storing 168 hours on a 2TB drive in the same physical footprint.

From rugged portable drives to ultra-fast rack-mount arrays, G-Tech storage solutions support virtually all levels of AV production and have become well-established in production facilities worldwide.

"As file-based acquisition rapidly increases, so does the need for fast, reliable and large capacity storage solutions. G-Tech's Fibre Channel and FireWire storage products have been a cornerstone in our business, providing transport, I/O and render solutions that we need to be successful," said Michael Cioni, CEO of LIGHTIRON Digital, a Hollywood-based post production house that focuses entirely on end-to-end file-based sequencing. "With G-Tech's new 2TB, 7,200 RPM-based external storage solutions, production can minimize the number of shuttle drives going to and from the set, and post production can minimize its storage footprint, while increasing its overall storage capacity. Storage and speed of this size couldn't have come at a better time."

"I can't wait to get my hands on some of the new 2TB G-Tech external drives. For an HD stock footage company like mine, I need reliable, high-capacity, high-performance storage devices for editing, formatting and transporting content through the workflow process and ultimately to the client," said Clark Dunbar, founder of Mammoth HD. "We have to know that the equipment we invest in will work, and we rely on G-Technology."

"We've grown accustom to using G-Tech products over the years, as they have consistently delivered high performance, high capacity, peace of mind and affordability. G-Tech drives perform without a stutter, which is critical as we race to deliver projects such as the Sundance-winning film FUEL," said Todd Sali, founder of thesandbox, a solar-powered production and post boutique studio. "From the outstanding G-DRIVE minis used in our field production, to the G-SPEED eS for screaming-fast, direct-connect video editing, to the mother ship G-SPEED FC XL, we count on the security and performance of the incomparable Hitachi drives inside. We are thrilled to see the new 2TB capacities coming online, which will give us the ultimate in storage density, performance and price."
