Honeywell Launches Wheatmeal - Zibb.com

In its continued quest to make Nigerians healthier and richer, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc yesterday launched Honeywell wheatmeal into the nation's market. The new product is expected to meet all nutritional and health needs of all Nigerians of all ages.

Speaking during the launch of the product in Lagos, the Executive Vice Chairman of the company, Babatunde Odunayo said the Honeywell wheatmeal is poised to be a nutritious staple in Nigerian homes and is good for the whole family, stressing that the wheatmeal is a healthy ball meal, rich in protein, fibre, minerals and lots of vitamins.

"Honeywell wheatmeal is 100 per cent wheat. It is therefore very rich in protein and fibre which are good for the body. The brand is also rich in minerals and vitamins and plant protein which is why Honeywell wheatmeal is particularly very good for the body", he said

Odunayo said the product already has NAFDAC certification and was recently presented with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON)'s mandatory conformity assessment programme award for quality.

He said: "Before the introduction of Honeywell wheatmeal, Nigerians normally consume the ball food by buying raw wheat and griding or milling the wheat into powder form. Of course, this domestic production process further adds to the turnaround time between purchase and consumption. The domestic production process might not also be very hygienic and the quality of the wheat so purchased cannot be guaranteed."

Odunayo explained that with the introduction of Honey wheatmeal, consumers are guaranteed hassle free meals, which are made from the highest quality wheat and a world class manufacturing process.

He said the product is not restricted to any particular age group adding that anyone who enjoys ball foods and is desirous of more healthy meals would enjoy it.

Honeywell and Eastern Illinois University Bring the Heat With Biomass-Fueled Plant - Zibb.com

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced a $79-million renewable energy and building retrofit program with Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in Charleston, Ill. The program, which combines energy-efficient facility upgrades with one of the largest biomass-fueled heating plants on a university campus, will help EIU address deferred maintenance, improve its infrastructure, and save approximately $140 million in energy and operating costs over the next two decades.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20071030/AQTU029LOGO)

EIU will finance the improvements and use the savings, guaranteed by Honeywell through a 20-year performance contract, to pay for the work. As a result, the program will not place a burden on the university's budget, or require additional taxpayer dollars or student fees.

The upgrades will impact all facilities on the 320-acre campus, and significantly curb the university's energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. For example, they will reduce electricity consumption by an estimated 6.2 million kilowatt-hours per year -- enough energy to power more than 580 homes annually. Carbon dioxide emissions will also decrease by nearly 20,000 metric tons each year. According to figures from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this is equivalent to removing more than 3,600 cars from the road.

"Like many universities, our list of needs across campus is much larger than the financial resources available," said Bill Perry, president of Eastern Illinois University. "This program allows us to make critical improvements and keep our facilities comfortable and functional for years to come. Plus, we're able to reduce our carbon footprint at the same time. It's an ideal solution for the university and surrounding community."

The focal point of the program is the construction of a new steam plant on the southeast corner of campus that will be driven by two large biomass gasifiers, the first application of this technology in the region. The plant will use wood chips sourced from the local logging industry to generate steam and heat buildings on campus. And it will replace the university's aging steam plant, which is inconveniently located in the center of campus, consumes more than 10,000 tons of coal per year and requires constant maintenance.

Through biomass gasification, the wood chips are heated in an airtight, oxygen-deprived chamber until they break down to create a synthetic gas that burns similar to natural gas. The gas is then used to fire the boilers, giving the university a carbon-neutral solution for heating its facilities. As a result, all of the steam heating load for the university will be met through a renewable resource.

EIU chose the biomass system based on input from the Honeywell Renewable Energy Scorecard, a first-of-its-kind selection tool that analyzes location-specific details to pinpoint the technology with the most significant environmental and economic drivers.

As part of the new plant, Honeywell will also install a small turbine that uses excess steam to produce electricity. The turbine is expected to generate more than 2.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, reducing the amount of energy the university purchases from the grid and providing another environmentally friendly energy source.

Additional conservation measures include:

    -- Retrocommissioning all mechanical systems on campus to ensure efficient
        operation;
    -- Constructing a new high-voltage switch yard to consolidate two intake
        points for electricity, which will lower the university's utility rates.
    -- Updating the chilled water system to provide more flexibility in
        determining which chillers to use for its cooling needs;
    -- Replacing windows at five residence halls with double-pane insulating
        glass;
    -- Upgrading lighting fixtures and installing occupancy sensors throughout
        campus to help reduce energy use;
    --  Retrofitting plumbing systems to conserve water use;

    -- And sealing building envelopes to prevent the loss of warm and cool air.

Honeywell will also provide ongoing commissioning, and measurement and verification as part of the contract. The upgrades are expected to be complete by end of 2012.

"Using renewable energy not only delivers environmental benefits, it can also generate economic payback," said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. "Through guaranteed energy savings, organizations like Eastern Illinois University can make investments in their facility infrastructure and reduce carbon dioxide emissions without impacting the bottom line."

Honeywell Tailors Solutions to Help Manufacturers Comply with New Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Honeywell (NYSE:HON) has introduced a set of tailored solutions to help process manufacturers comply with a new federal regulation that requires facilities to track and report greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation will take effect Jan. 1, 2010 and applies to industrial facilities that emit more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. It will mark the first time the EPA has required large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to begin collecting CO2 data.

Honeywell's facility-wide GHG emissions reporting dashboard can help companies meet this requirement in a simple, cost-effective, low-risk manner, and provide flexibility as environmental, regulatory and operating conditions change in the future. The GHG emissions dashboard, in conjunction with the Cirrus EIS(TM) Environmental Information Systems measures, acquires, calculates, records and analyzes emissions data and accurately notifies and reports from multiple emissions sources.

"Reporting CO2 isn't a one-size-fits-all approach because industrial plants will have unique needs in complying with this new regulation," said Chris Jones director for Energy Efficiency and Green Initiatives, Honeywell Process Solutions. "Some will need to expand emissions monitoring by adding CO2 capabilities, others will require calculations to determine emissions, and some of those will use more complex calculations than others. Honeywell will work with these companies to determine their specific compliance needs and offer the right solutions to meet those needs."

In addition to a facility-wide GHG emissions reporting dashboard, Honeywell offers consulting support services to help companies design optimal data collection strategies. These solutions can stand alone or be integrated into Honeywell control systems, Cirrus EIS or third-party control systems.

The GHG emissions dashboard is included in the Honeywell Energy Dashboard, which is part of the company's larger Energy Management Solutions portfolio. The portfolio helps processing facilities improve energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions, and the dashboard gathers information from various instruments and systems and tracks their energy consumption against dynamic energy targets. The Energy Dashboard enables users to establish specific goals for reducing energy consumption, costs and the associated GHG emissions, as well as to measure actual performance against those goals.

"Reporting GHG emissions may not be the final requirement for the process industries; it's reasonable to expect that future regulations will require emissions reduction and adherence to targets," said Jones. "Honeywell is strongly positioned to help manufacturers not only meet challenges posed by these new requirements, but prepare for future requirements down the road."

Honeywell Awarded Smart Grid Grant From U.S. Department of Energy - Zibb.com

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced it has been awarded an $11.4-million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the largest single energy grid modernization investment in U.S. history. The grant, one of several awarded from a smart grid funding package under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), solidifies Honeywell's position as a key player in helping the U.S. transition to a more efficient, reliable and secure electric system.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20071030/AQTU029LOGO)

"Honeywell has long been supportive of investing in our country's energy independence and these grants are essential to that end," said Roger Fradin, president and chief executive officer of Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions. "However, the hard part comes next -- rebuilding the energy infrastructure. Honeywell has the project management experience to help utilities successfully deploy their programs and forge a tighter link with customers. And we have the technology to help homeowners and businesses take control of their energy use and maximize the benefits of a smart grid."

One of only four non-utility companies to receive funding, Honeywell will use the grant to support a critical peak pricing response program that will help commercial and industrial facilities in the Southern California Edison (SCE) service territory automatically implement energy management strategies to reduce costs and improve efficiency. The program will support nearly 700 customers as SCE and other California utilities move to critical peak pricing -- a program that offers rate discounts during the summer months to customers who can reduce or shift power during periods of peak electrical consumption.

The new rate structure will see prices spike during periods of peak demand, approximately 10 to 15 days per year. SCE will send a notice prior to any increase and Honeywell will install technology that allows customers to automate load-shedding strategies that reduce energy use during these periods. Based on open automated demand response (OpenADR) standards and powered by Tridium's Niagara(AX) Framework(R) and JACE(R) controller, the system will receive the utility's signal, communicate with the facility's building automation system and make changes based on parameters the customer sets. This could include turning off banks of lights, cycling equipment on and off, or temporarily increasing temperature set points in the facility.

In addition to installing the technology, Honeywell will provide customer outreach, education and engineering services, as well as ongoing support.

"Honeywell's program integrates business customers with a smarter grid," said Larry Oliva, director, Tariff Programs and Services, Southern California Edison. "Our customers will have the ability to decide how they want to respond to pricing changes, and the subsequent reduction in energy use will help us provide affordable, clean power over the long term."

Honeywell is also helping other organizations implement projects tied to the smart grid investment grants, including an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) program for the city of Quincy, Fla. Honeywell will manage the installation of smart meters throughout the city and provide technology to automate commercial load-shedding strategies, similar to the SCE program.

Honeywell also won ARRA grants for the research and development of technology that ties into the smart grid. For example, the company is testing solutions that will significantly reduce down time and failures for the growing fleet of wind turbines in the United States. Researchers are also developing a controls infrastructure for optimizing renewable energy micro-grids.

The DOE funding, as well as Honeywell's involvement in other grants, reflects the company's expertise in smart grid services and technologies. Honeywell Utility Solutions, part of the Building Solutions business, has delivered demand response programs for almost 20 utilities in the United States and Canada. It specializes in all aspects of demand response from program design and load-control technology to customer recruitment and support.

Honeywell has given utilities combined control of more than 1 gigawatt of peak consumption, which is equivalent to the generation capacity of a medium- to large-sized plant. The company also provides smart metering, and energy and water conservation solutions to utilities. For more information, visit www.honeywell.com/utility.
