SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov 19, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today announced at the 2009 Streaming Media West Show that it has now integrated the latest Adobe(R) Flash(R) Media Server software into a single Content Delivery Network (CDN) platform. Level 3 has taken a unique approach to deploying Flash Media Server 3.5 software by merging the Adobe technology and its own, proprietary, advanced HTTP delivery technology into a single multi-protocol platform. This solution positions Level 3 to accelerate and optimize the evolution to HTTP as the single ubiquitous standard for content delivery over the Internet.
As content owners increasingly publish higher-quality video to the Internet, consumers are demanding that their online video experiences match those from traditional television broadcasts. Level 3 combines its global content delivery expertise with the broadcast and video experience that the company has delivered to major network and sports leagues for decades. Level 3 is working closely with Adobe to allow the Level 3 CDN platform to provide a stable, scalable environment for delivering these next-generation applications to a global audience. By combining the streaming protocols in Adobe Flash technology with Level 3's robust CDN, Level 3 is taking a significant step forward toward the vision of bringing a broadcast quality experience to the Internet.
"We collaborated closely with Level 3 to integrate the latest Adobe Flash Media Server software into the Level 3 CDN," said Bill Rusitzky, senior director of global media alliances at Adobe. "The combination of Level 3's experience and global reach coupled with capabilities like dynamic streaming will provide a superior overall consumer experience that will help increase viewing time and engagement among users."
Level 3's CDN was built to handle massive audiences. It combines thousands of servers and hundreds of terabytes of storage with the expansive reach and performance of the Level 3 IP backbone and the company has a proven record of supporting individual customers and events with significant traffic peaks. Level 3's approach to Adobe Flash Media Server 3.5 deployment combines Adobe's feature-rich and broadly adopted media technology with the security, targeting and additional features of this proven Level 3 platform.
"Since more than 75 percent of online video is delivered via Adobe's Flash Media platform, the decision to partner with Adobe to unify our broadcast-delivery platform was easy," said Mark Taylor, vice president of Product Delivery and Strategy at Level 3. "Our close partnership with industry leaders like Adobe has been crucial to developing our innovative approach to the market for Flash delivery and all forms of adaptive streaming. We look forward to continuing our efforts together in an even more meaningful way in 2010."

ATLANTA, Nov 12, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today announced that it is expanding its operations and enhancing its local presence in the Atlanta area. Through this initiative, Level 3 will combine its extensive backbone network, metro fiber-optic footprint, and a locally focused sales and customer support team to provide mid-market enterprises with greater access to Level 3's full spectrum of communications services.
"We are building strong relationships with businesses throughout north Georgia because we couple our understanding of the ever-changing communications landscape with face-to-face local customer support," said Allan English, Level 3's Atlanta general manager. "We are seeing increased demand for a competitive alternative in the marketplace, and we're taking our involvement in Atlanta to the next level to be that alternative for mid-market business customers."
Level 3 has an extensive footprint throughout north Georgia that passes nearly 15,000 businesses. The company will add capacity to the network and will expand the number of businesses that are directly connected to this network, enabling significant scalability and reach of service for these businesses.
As one of the company's core locations, Level 3 is deeply rooted in the Atlanta area, employing more than 250 people. As part of this initiative, Level 3 is realigning its workforce in the Atlanta area to combine an on-the-ground presence with intimate marketplace knowledge to deliver an outstanding customer experience. The company also is redirecting support resources to focus specifically on mid-market enterprises throughout north Georgia.
Level 3's local sales and customer support team will be on hand to provide expertise and guidance to Atlanta enterprise customers as they navigate the changing communications landscape.
