DULUTH, Ga., Nov 11, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today opens its new manufacturing plant in Manaus, Amazonas state to support the market demand for self-service automated teller machines (ATM) in Brazil, the Caribbean and throughout Latin America. The new facility will produce and build self-service machines -- specifically NCR's SelfServe(TM) advanced ATMs.
In only 90 days after announcing plans to build the plant in Brazil, NCR was able to open the facility and begin production of ATM machines for its Latin American and Caribbean customers. The company celebrated the opening at its plant today with key government officials and customers from Brazil who participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony, a tour of the manufacturing plant and an opportunity to see the production of some of the first NCR ATM machines being built at the new site.
The innovation and manufacturing center will create about 250 new jobs in the city, and enable NCR to deliver world-class solutions to customers and strengthen its competitive edge in Brazil-- a key market to NCR's growth strategy. Last month, testing and certification at the 2.5-acre plant was conducted and completed by NCR's global quality organization, as well as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA International) and the Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
NCR's decision to bring ATM manufacturing in-house to Brazil was driven by the company's belief that as self-service ATM technology becomes more innovative and strategic to financial institutions, the ability to control manufacturing in key markets such as Brazil becomes a core and competitive advantage to a growth strategy. The company recently opened its North American manufacturing plant in Columbus, GA, and by in-sourcing the production of NCR SelfServ ATMs, in both regions of the world, the company plans to decrease time-to-market, improve internal collaboration, and lower current operating costs.
"With the new plant, we'll be better positioned to provide a full range of ATM solutions aligned with unique requirements of Brazilian market, while achieving our expansion and operating cost reduction goals," ensured Elias Silva, president of NCR Brazil. "Financial market institutions in Brazil are continuously looking for customized ATMs to provide a unique service to their customers, such as biometric identification, check printers and high security levels. Those demands will be totally fed by NCR's products, produced in the Manaus plant."
NCR has been doing business in Brazil for more than 70 years and continues to be committed to financial inclusion and manufacturing innovative ATMs that have significant impact on businesses, consumers and communities. With NCR's advanced machines, customers can now withdraw money, collect pensions or welfare benefits, pay utility bills and buy prepaid cell phone cards -- and all within walking distance to their home or business.
"Surveys with the retail banking industry show that the Brazilian ATM market is to grow 16 percent by 2012, which warrants that significant investments are made," said Bob Tramontano, NCR's vice president of marketing. "NCR's investment of R$73 million will help shape the future of manufacturing in Brazil as we build, design and engineer specific products to meet the needs of our customers in the region."
In October, NCR announced the opening of its North American ATM manufacturing facility in Columbus, GA, creating 870 new jobs that did not exist previously at NCR.

DULUTH, Ga., Nov 04, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), the U.S. market leader in intelligent (no envelope) deposit automation, is making its patented two-sided thermal (2ST) printing technology standard on all NCR SelfServ(TM) 20- and 30-series ATMs for North America, further establishing NCR SelfServ as the most complete intelligent deposit solution on the market.
Through intelligent deposit, check images are printed on the ATM receipt to validate the deposit -- a valuable option for providing consumers confidence in their transaction. However, those check images can at least double the normal length of a receipt with just one check image, creating a cumbersome takeaway for consumers and requiring additional service visits by the financial institution to replace paper rolls.
NCR's patented 2ST printing technology improves the efficiency of the printing process by allowing simultaneous printing on both the front and back side of a receipt, label or other media. By printing on both the front and back side, 2ST printing also provides significant environmental benefit, using as much as 45 percent less paper. ATMs with 2ST printers also can print intelligent deposit receipts up to 73 percent faster than competing technology. NCR recently added 2ST printing in combination with a dual-roll printing feature, further reducing paper use and increasing cost savings to the ATM deployer.
The adoption rate of 2ST is growing. New 2009 2ST printer installations are on track to more than double from the current installed base in retail, financial and other industries -- installations include BNZ, one of New Zealand's largest financial institutions.
All North American financial institutions ordering NCR SelfServ 20- or 30-series ATMs will receive integrated 2ST printers based on network support. Certifications for this technology among the major networks are scheduled, and most should be complete by the end of 2009 for U.S. APTRA Edge v3.01.
"Two-sided printing is the new standard for receipt printing around the world, and we believe printing on both sides of the receipt is a natural extension of any intelligent deposit program," said Michael O'Laughlin, vice president and general manager, NCR Financial Services. "By making 2ST a standard offering on NCR SelfServ, we will help our customers improve uptime and availability, reduce paper waste and supply chain costs, and give consumers a better -- and complete -- intelligent deposit experience."
Worldwide, retailers and other institutions use more than 508,200,000 lbs. of paper each year to print receipts. In the U.S. alone, receipt paper consumption is as high as 228,690,000 lbs/yr. 2ST can help financial institutions meet their environmental goals and reduce worldwide paper consumption -- while improving customer experience -- by printing on both sides of the receipt.
In addition, NCR SelfServ ATMs help reduce the maintenance carbon footprint compared to older generations as they require less energy and paper and fewer engineer call-outs. A 25 percent reduction in the physical cabling over previous generations of ATMs, combined with LED lighting, also helps reduce power wastage.

DULUTH, Ga., Nov 04, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) and Evolution Robotics Retail (ERR) announced that ERR's LaneHawk, which enables grocers of all sizes to eliminate most losses from bottom-of-basket shrink, is now available with NCR Advanced Checkout Solution (ACS) software and with the NCR SelfServ Checkout solution.
LaneHawk combines video with patented object recognition technology to detect and identify items left in the bottom of checkout baskets during checkout. Unnoticed by cashiers, such items cause losses averaging $3,500 per lane each year, according to data from ERR. LaneHawk alerts cashiers and automatically enters bottom-of-basket items into the shopper's order, reducing shrink. Since items do not need to be removed from the basket for scanning, checkout speed and shopper service are enhanced while doing away with cashier injuries from lifting heavy items from the bottom of the basket.
NCR ACS is currently installed in more than 50,000 checkout lanes, at retailers ranging from national and regional superstores and supermarkets to independent grocers. With NCR's advanced cashier interface, retailers using NCR ACS typically experience increased productivity of 15 to 25 percent and reduced training time of up to 75 percent.
NCR SelfServ Checkout gives consumers the option to scan, bag and pay for goods on their own using cash or debit/credit cards. Featuring a user-friendly interface that intelligently guides consumers through the checkout process, it is designed to enhance customers' shopping experience, while helping retailers improve operational efficiency.
Mark Belfiglio, vice president of sales and marketing at Evolution Robotics Retail, said the integration of LaneHawk with NCR ACS and NCR SelfServ Checkout is good news for retailers. "This step significantly extends the universe of retailers, large and small, who now have the means to combat bottom-of-basket loss with leading-edge technology," Belfiglio said.
LaneHawk will be demonstrated with NCR ACS and NCR SelfServ Checkout in NCR's booth at the National Retail Federation convention and expo, Jan. 10-13 in New York.
"In addition to reducing shrinkage, effective bottom-of-basket detection can contribute to faster checkout and enhanced customer satisfaction," said John Saccomanno, NCR Industry Marketing director. "We're pleased to add this advanced loss-prevention technology to the list of third-party NCR-compatible solutions."
ERR and NCR announced the availability of the solution to NCR authorized resellers at the recently held NCR partner conference.
