Elections Commission Raises Ridiculous Allegations, Liberty Party Claims - Zibb.com
Monrovia, Jul 23, 2008 (The NEWS/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
The opposition Liberty Party has described as ridiculous comments by the National Elections Commission that the Party's leadership is unconstitutional and lacks legitimacy.
National Elections Commission Chairman James Flomoyan told a news conference Monday that the current leadership of the opposition Liberty Party is unconstitutional and lacks legitimacy.
Mr. Flomoyan indicated that Article 79(e) of the Liberian Constitution provides for an election of party officials at least once in six years.
Additionally, the NEC Boss claimed that the leadership of Liberty Party was instead handpicked by Cllr. Charles Brumskine, in contravention of the Constitution.
But the NEC Chairman comments have been rejected by the Liberty Party in a statement issued Tuesday.
The Liberty Party pointed out that Chairman Flomoyan is quite aware of the Party's compliance with the Constitution of Liberia, adding that LP's Constitution and Bylaws are filed with the NEC and provides in Article V (1) that "the National Convention is the highest decision making body of the Party and shall elect all national officers, adopt platform, policies, and programs of the Party."
The LP statement further explained that the National Convention shall meet once every six years, or six months before any scheduled national elections, whichever is more frequent.
"With regard to the Chairman's assertion that Cllr. Brumskine selected the current Chairman of Liberty Party, we ask the Chairman to review Article V, Section 2 of Liberty Party's Constitution and Bylaws, which provides that the Executive Council is the highest decision making body outside of the National Convention to fill vacancies created by resignation, incapacity or otherwise for nationally elected Party officers in the absence of the Convention," Liberty Party stated.
Additionally, the statement quoted the Party's constitution as saying that the Standard Bearer shall preside over all meetings of the Executive Council. In the absence of a Standard Bearer the National Chair shall preside over the Executive Council.
"Following the resignation of the Chairman and other national officers of Liberty Party, the Executive Council, presided over by the Standard Bearer, appointed the current Chairman and other national officers to fill the vacancies until our next National Convention. As the Chairman concedes, the decision and action of our Party were taken and filed with the NEC more than two years ago. And the Chairman and the entire NEC, in accordance with law, have continuously recognized and interacted with Chairman Israel Akinsanya, as the legally constituted and duly recognized head of Liberty Party," Liberty Party said.
The Party wondered why the National Elections Commission is now accusing it of violating the Constitution of Liberia.
"Why would the NEC of its own volition raise such ridiculous allegations against our Party? Is this an attempt to distract from the real issues facing our country?" Liberty Party asked.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Liberty Party Israel Akinsanya has called on President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to cooperate with his party and other major opposition parties in restructuring the NEC and amending the election laws thereby ensuring the establishment of an Election Court.

NUT Leaders Blame FG for Lingering Strike - Zibb.com
Jul 22, 2008 (Vanguard/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
LEADERS of the striking members of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have decried the rigid attitude of government in issuing enabling circular for the implementation of Teachers' Salary Structure (TSS) for the lingering industrial action that shut down public primary and secondary schools for a fourth week running.
This is coming even as NUT and All Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), have directed members nationwide to begin fasting and prayers tomorrow to seek God's intervention in the struggle for the implementation of TSS.
A communique issued by leaders of NUT and ANCOPSS at the end of their meeting in Abuja, called on President Musa Yar'Adua to urgently address the on-going nation-wide teachers strike by directing the implementation of the approved teachers' peculiar allowances through the release of an enabling circular.
According to the communique: " NEC-ln-Session observed with extreme sadness and total disappointment that the posture of the Federal Government is completely antithetical to the quick resolution of the crisis as it has maintained a rigid stand of reneging on an otherwise concluded arrangement.
NEC-ln-Session is pained to note that at every point of the dialogue with government officials the resolutions reached were jettisoned and rejected by the Federal Government leaving the Union with no choice than to conclude that the Federal Government does not have the goodwill to sincerely address this problem with a view to resolving the impasse.
NEC-ln-Session reiterated its position on the implementation of the Teachers' Salary Structure (TSS) by calling on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to intervene with due patriotism and fatherly disposition by directing the issuance of a circular for the payment of the approved Teachers' Peculiar Allowances to Federal Government teachers so as to signal the preparedness of the Federal Government to act in good faith, and to enable the States to follow suit."
Leaders of NUT and ANCOPSS argued that the issue of the implementation of TSS appears to has gone beyond human understanding and therefore directed teachers across the country to begin a marathon fasting and prayers for God's intervention from Wednesday (Tomorrow).
According to them: "The battle for TSS has gone beyond human understanding. Therefore, NEC-ln-Session | has resolved that every teacher in Nigeria should embark on serious fasting and prayers on Wednesday 23rd July, 2008 so as to invite the Almighty God to prevail and intervene in this matter.
All teachers are enjoined to participate in this crucial spiritual exercise. Teachers are urged to make this prayer a regular programme for nemesis to catch up with all enemies of teachers and all opposition to T.S.S."

NEC Computers: NEC Computers UK goes 100% channel - Zibb.com
London, Jul 22, 2008 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
NEC Computers today announced its new sales strategy to distribute its entire range of computer solutions exclusively through the channel. Within the next three months it will recruit one major mainline distributor and subsequently, in the next year, sign up to 100 accredited resellers, enabling NEC Computers to supply its products on a next-day basis to its customers and take full advantage of its build-to-order capability.
NEC Computers will sell its full range of desktop PCs, laptops, servers and storage products solely through the channel and will sign up specialist partners to distribute its high-end enterprise solutions, such as NEC's Virtual PC Center and Fault Tolerant server range. NEC Computers already has a strong partner network in the education market and is looking to further develop its reseller base in all other vertical sectors, including healthcare, finance and the media industry.
Resellers that are currently enrolled on NEC Computers' partner program already enjoy a number of key benefits, such as being able to utilise NEC Computer's European-based build-to-order manufacturing facility. NEC Computers also offers its resellers a dedicated account management team, full product training, and products that have a stable lifecycle and are environmentally-friendly. Alongside this, NEC's extranet is a popular and vital tool used by resellers, allowing them to overcome the information challenges that can often occur within a multi-vendor environment.
To support its move to become exclusively channel-focussed, NEC Computers is launching the "NEC Generation" range of computers in the UKmarket. The entry-level product range has achieved excellent recognition throughout Europeand is specifically designed for the SME market.
As part of NEC Computers' commitment to the channel Herve Le Fell has been appointed as UKManaging Director and Rick Wallis has been appointed as UK Sales Director. Herve, who has overseen operations in NEC Computer's Headquarters, will support the overall channel strategy while Rick, who has a rich heritage in working for and with computer resellers, will oversee NEC Computers' sales operations in the UK.
"The UKis the second largest market for NEC Computers in Europe, and we are looking to replicate the success we have achieved in other European markets by selling our products exclusively through the channel. We currently have excellent long-term relationships with a number of UKresellers and are looking to migrate any direct business completely over to the channel as we believe the level of service we can provide to our current customer base will be enhanced by involving the right channel partner. This move makes perfect sense, rather than competing with channel partners for their customers, we want to align ourselves and support the channel," said Rick Wallis, newly appointed UKsales director, NEC Computers UK.

Veep Condemns MMD Bickering - Zibb.com
Jul 22, 2008 (The Times of Zambia/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
VICE -President Rupiah Banda has condemned the continued bickering among MMD members saying it is portraying that there are divisions in the ruling party when in fact not.
And MMD national chairman, Michael Mabenga has said the party will soon meet to discuss problems that had recently rocked the ruling party.
Mr Banda said on arrival at Livingstone International Airport yesterday that the bickering among MMD members in the last two weeks of the President Mwanawasa's absence had exposed the troublemakers.
The vice-president, who was in Livingstone to open the 52nd Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) conference, said that there was need for MMD members to work together at the time when the president was hospitalised.
"The fact that some of us are quiet does not mean that we have nothing to say. Let us make sure that we do not disunite the country. Let us look after the party until the President returns.
"I have been in politics for more than 50 years now and am still here and those who talk too much are no longer there," he said.
He said there was no one who could claim to know everything and called on MMD members to learn to listen and work with each other.
Meanwhile, Mr Banda said funding had been released for the Livingstone-Victoria Falls border road and work would commence soon.
The Government would continue with the fertiliser support programme and was currently looking at ways to increase Government portion considering that the price of fertiliser had gone up.
Later when he met Senior Chief Mukuni of the Toka Leya people, Mr Banda commended the traditional leader for ensuring education, health, tourist facilities and other social amenities for his people.
Southern Province Minister, Daniel Munkombwe assured that there was no crisis in the MMD.
Earlier MMD provincial secretary, Emmanuel Siamweela commended the Government for ensuring development in Livingstone.
And Mr Mabenga said in an interview that it was hoped that the NEC meeting would help dismiss unwarranted speculation about the party leadership.
"We are going to hold a NEC meeting and members will be informed on the date to discuss party matters," he said.
Mr Mabenga told ZANIS separately that the NEC meeting would iron out all pertinent issues that had recently rocked the party.
He said the party wanted to deal with the anxiety and speculation that had arisen following President Mwanawasa's illness.
Mr Mabenga said the party decided to hold a NEC meeting to allow members speak out on any issue of concern behind closed doors.
He said the party felt that it was prudent to openly discuss behind closed doors issues that threatened to divide the party.
Mr Mabenga said it was hoped that the meeting would help dismiss unwarranted speculation and consolidate the party leadership.
MMD deputy national secretary, Jeff Kaande recently said the party had charged its chairman for information and publicity, Benny Tetamashimba for allegedly bringing the party into ridicule and giving out false information.
Mr Kaande said Mr Mabenga would constitute a disciplinary committee of six NEC members to look into the case involving Mr Tetamashimba.
MMD national secretary, Katele Kalumba had earlier resisted the proposal to call for a full NEC meeting in the absence of the party president.
A NEC member, Walusiku Lisulo recently petitioned NEC to convene a meeting to discuss Mr Tetamashimba's conduct.
In an interview yesterday, Mr Tetamashimba said he had not yet received the charge letter and that he was still carrying out party duties.
