ON Semiconductor Unveils RGB LED Pixel Drivers for Impact Architectural Lighting - Zibb.com

ON Semiconductor, a supplier of silicon solutions, announced it has expanded its line of constant-current, LDD (low dropout driver) products acquired from Catalyst Semiconductor, to include two high-brightness RGB LED pixel drivers.

The CAT4103 and CAT4109 are three-channel, linear-based constant-current LED drivers for RGB LED pixel control in impact LED architectural lighting.

ON said the CAT4103 is designed for high-end, multi-color, "intelligent" LED architectural lighting applications, the company said. It features a serial interface, which can support data rates up to 25 megahertz (MHz) and offers fully buffered data outputs to ensure integrity is maintained over distributed (long distance), daisy-chained lighting systems.

The CAT4109 uses a parallel interface with each channel having a dedicated PWM control, making it ideal for the more conventional LED visual effects applications, such as color-mixing and accent architectural lighting, the company noted in a release.

ON Semiconductor Unveils AB Audio Amplifier for Portable and Wireless Apps - Zibb.com

ON Semiconductor, a supplier of silicon solutions, has introduced the NCP2991, a Class AB audio amplifier.

"Having a clear, noise-free audio output is crucial to the user's satisfaction of a cell phone or portable media device," said Manor Narayanan, VP and general manager of ON Semiconductor's Digital and Consumer Products Group. "Hardware designers, however, typically encounter unexpected noise issue coming from the audio system. ON Semiconductor's Class AB amplifier ensures noise-free amplification and is resistive to external noise sources, so it guarantees a high-quality audio performance. By enforcing our amplifier's robustness, we expect to minimize the audio designer's effort and design cycle time."

According to the company, the NCP2991 offers a Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR) of -103 decibels (dB) that eliminates any noise that may be generated by the fluctuation of battery supply voltage, the company said. The device is resistive to the "TDMA noise" (Time Division Multiple Access) that occurs during the Global System Mobile (GSM) transmission. Additionally, the device guarantees zero pop-and-click noise at start-up and shut-down, which apply to all input configurations.

The start-up time of NCP2991 is selectable between 15 milliseconds (ms) and 20 milliseconds (ms). Therefore, most of the time, the NCP2991 consumes only 20 nanoamps (nA).

The company said the NCP2991 is also capable of delivering 1.35 watts (W) of output power to an 8 ohm speaker, or 1.1 W to a 4 ohm speaker. It also has built-in thermal overload protection circuitry to disable the device's operation in case of an over-temperature situation.

"The NCP2991 is a key addition to ON Semiconductor's portfolio of solutions targeted at the four primary subsystems typically found in most portable applications," said Wes Reid, ON Semiconductor director of strategic marketing and systems engineering for Digital Consumer products. "This device specifically addresses needs within the Audio subsystem. ON Semiconductor also offers solutions for the lighting/display, power management and interconnect subsystems found in handheld and portable devices."

ON Semiconductor Rolls Out Line of MOSFET Devices for Consumer and Industrial Applications -

ON Semiconductor, a supplier of silicon solutions, announced that it has introduced eight power MOSFET devices specifically designed for medium voltage switching applications.

ON said the MOSFETs are for use in DC motor drives, LED drivers, power supplies, converters, pulse width modulation (PWM) controls and bridge circuits where diode speed and commutating safe operating areas are crucial and benefit from an additional safety margin against unexpected voltage transients that these devices provide.

The 60 volt (V) devices are single N-channel MOSFETs offering lower RDS(on), which minimizes power dissipation. The devices also provide low gate charge and low gate charge ratio that reduces conduction and switching losses.

"The introduction of these medium voltage devices expands ON Semiconductor's portfolio of superior, market driven, power MOSFETs," said Paul Leonard, VP and general manager of ON Semiconductor's MOSFETs products division. "We plan to continue to introduce targeted MOSFET solutions that provide for the expanding needs of our consumer and industrial customer and strengthen the company's position as a leading industry provider of energy efficient power switching solutions."

All of the devices are RoHS compliant and are delivered in Pb-free packages, the company noted in a release.

ON Semiconductor Releases Standalone LIN Transceiver - Zibb.com

ON Semiconductor, a supplier of silicon solutions, has announced the NCV7321, a standalone Local Interconnect Network (LIN) transceiver for the automotive industry.

The low-power, mixed-signal NCV7321 is a replacement for the AMIS-30600 single-wire LIN transceiver, but with electromagnetic capability (EMC) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) performance and lower power dissipation, the company said.

ON said the LINv2.1- and J2602-compliant NCV7321 has the same functionality as the AMIS-30600, but with a different pin-out, offering customers alternative sourcing for existing LIN transceivers. Automotive body and comfort applications for the NCV7321 include tire guard ECUs, receivers for remote key entry, electronic steering locks, window and sun hood lifters, alarms, seat movement and mirror controllers.

"The NCV7321 gives automotive Tier 1 and 2 suppliers another option for putting LIN-enabled networks into vehicles," said Jan Polfliet, manager ASSP, Automotive Products at ON Semiconductor. "The low power dissipation and reduced system cost using ON Semiconductor's LIN transceivers make them attractive for a wide range of existing and evolving automotive applications."

The NCV7321 completes the ON Semiconductor LIN transceiver ASSP family, which currently consists of the NCV7420D23G and NCV7420D25G. The NCV7321 has all the functionality of the NCV7420, but without the built-in voltage regulators of the current parts. ON Semiconductor's SmartPower technology, which combines high-voltage analog circuitry and dense digital functionality in a single chip, provides ESD protection to +/- 8 kilovolt (kV). Other standard features include indefinite short circuit protection between supply and ground, a thermal shutdown capability and an integrated slope control function to ensure low electromagnetic emissions. The rated operating temperature is -40 degrees to 105 degreesC.

The NCV7321 is currently available in an SOIC 8-pin package.
