NORWALK, Conn., Nov 05, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) today announced that Polycom's Co-Founder and CTO Jeffrey Rodman has accepted an invitation to join the list of Keynote Presenters at ITEXPO East 2010, taking place January 20-22, 2010 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Rodman's presentation, scheduled for Wednesday, January 20th at 4:00 PM, will discuss the future of IP-based audio and video communications.
Since co-founding Polycom in 1990, Rodman has been instrumental in the realization of Polycom's iconic products for voice, video, network communications, and other media.
According to TMC CEO Rich Tehrani, ITEXPO attendees will be impressed with the range of relevant topics Mr. Rodman will cover in his address.
"Jeffrey Rodman is one of the more accomplished, and diverse experts that we've ever had speak at ITEXPO, and we're thrilled to share his wide-ranging interests with the audience at ITEXPO," said Rich Tehrani, CEO and group editor-in-chief of TMC. "Polycom remains on the forefront of digital conference capabilities, and I'm looking forward to hearing what Jeffrey and his team are working on at ITEXPO."
Prior to founding Polycom, Rodman built the engineering organization responsible for creating a revolutionary architecture at new startup PictureTel (then PicTel). There, he built the foundation for a family of systems that would later transform the industry. In 1980, Rodman joined Harris Video Systems and as director of engineering, where he pioneered new digital video processing systems for broadcast and production applications. He also spent six years developing and enhancing video and testing capabilities for military guided missile systems, at Hughes Aircraft Company. During this time, he created a novel approach to sound synthesis, which formed the foundation for his Master's thesis, and led to the development of Specialty Video Systems for marketing digital video effects in the entertainment industry. Rodman holds an MSEE and BSEE Cum Laude in electronic engineering from CSUN.
"I've been privileged to be a part of the evolving communications industry for more than 20 years, and I've seen some tremendous leaps in technology during that time," said Rodman. PLEASANTON, CA and NATICK, MA, Nov 03, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) --
VoiceCon San Francisco -- Vivox Inc., the market leader in voice services for developers of online games, virtual worlds and the social web, delivers voice chat to over 16 million users and supports billions of minutes of chat per month. Having doubled its number of users in the past year, the company expects to see exponential growth in the next 12 months thanks to a growing customer base and its recent launch of the Vivox Voice on Facebook application. One of Vivox's key differentiators is its high quality voice, which is powered by Polycom, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM) using the company's high definition (HD), royalty-free Siren(TM) 14/G 722.1C voice codec.
Since launching in 2005, Vivox has become the clear choice for developers and publishers that require a complete communications solution for its community, and the best for its brand. Recognizing the demand for the clearest communications among the gaming community, Vivox chose the Polycom Siren 14 codec for all of its online voice channels. Vivox HD voice chat brings the deepest level of connection and immersion to any experience where a user is engaged with a community. In a world where the stories within games and virtual worlds rival those of cinema and novels, voice renders emotion and imparts power. Quality voice chat is a game changer for players and developers alike who make these worlds and communities come alive, and Vivox is changing that game.
The move to HD Voice is inevitable
Consumer multimedia relies on state-of-the-art technologies to deliver the best end-user experience, and HD Voice is no exception. With the broadcast industry already standardized on HD technology for radio and television as well as the HD experience of MP3 players, iPods, etc., the next essential need for HD is the human voice. Carriers in Europe have already made strides in deliver HD voice over their networks, as stated in the New York Times article, Sound of Mobile Calls Gets an Upgrade.
Polycom, which first introduced HD Voice in its video conferencing systems more than 15 years ago, is also a visionary in delivering HD for voice communications. Polycom introduced its first HD phone in 2003 and is now delivering its entire lineup of SoundPoint(R) IP desktop, SoundStation IP(R) conference and VVX 1500 business media phones with built-in support for Polycom HD Voice and other high definition codecs. Others telephone manufacturers are following suit; business-class phones that don't support HD Voice are rapidly disappearing, and the move to HD Voice across all communications modes is rapidly accelerating.

millisecond frame lengths the lowest latency of any super-wideband
codec, which means that conversations are more natural and
spontaneous
-- Handles speech, music and natural sounds with ease
-- Polycom Siren 14 handles speech, music, and natural sounds with
equal ease - other codecs break up when presented with natural
sounds or music
-- Low bandwidth requirements enable better video quality
-- Operates at low bit rates: 24, 32, and 48 kbps rates leave more data
bandwidth available for improved system performance
-- Is the only state-of-the-art audio compression with royalty-free
license terms
-- All other royalty-free audio codecs use techniques from expired
patents. Their quality and compression performance is poor compared
to current standards.

Jim Toga, Vivox Co-Founder and Vice President of Engineering
"Providing the best online voice experience is our core focus at Vivox. We realize there is absolutely no comparison between standard definition voice and HD Voice, and so it became a matter of choosing the right technology. Polycom Siren 14 allows us to provide the best voice quality on the Web at a low bit rate so that we're not compromising other multimedia components of our clients' products. We looked at a number of HD codecs, and for our purposes, Polycom's Siren technology is the best alternative out there."
Jeff Rodman, Polycom Co-founder and CTO
"I've been promoting HD Voice for more than five years, so I'm very excited to see it gaining traction in the gaming industry. There are a number of codecs available, and Vivox took all of this into consideration in making their selection. Vivox's use of Siren 14 to host their millions of voice channels is fresh validation of the importance of HD Voice in human communication."

Wizzard Media Launches 24 New iPhone Apps
PITTSBURGH, Nov 05, 2009 -- Wizzard Media (NYSE Amex: WZE), the world's largest podcasting network, today announced the launch of 24 new iPhone(R) Apps available for sale in the App store including Investors Business Daily Editorials and Alaska HDTV. The average price for the new Apps is $1.99.
The newly launched Apps are iPhone companion Apps for popular podcasts on the Wizzard Media Network, offering audiences one-click access to the podcast directly on their iPhone or iPod Touch(R), bonus content and new social communication features creating an unprecedented level of audience engagement.
Wizzard recently announced 2009 third quarter network numbers of 12,281 podcasts downloaded 332 million times in the quarter by over 18 million unique monthly audience members. Approximately 70% of the audience for podcasts subscribe through iTunes(R) from which users download podcasts for their iPhone and iPod(R). Until recently, Wizzard's only means to derive revenues was through podcast publishing services as well as advertising sales.
With the launch of the iPhone App store in iTunes, Wizzard created a unique iPhone App that can be quickly customized for each podcast and allows podcast publishers to generate a new revenue stream by marketing their own iPhone App directly to their audience. Wizzard shares in this revenue with the podcast publisher. Now, with Wizzard's unique podcast companion App for the iPhone, participating podcasts can market their customized App to their audience and then drive future reoccurring episode and subscription sales through a process called in-App purchasing.
Analysts project the App market to be a $1.0 billion market today, headed for $4.0 billion by 2012. With the holiday season approaching and the recent launch of the iPhone in China, Wizzard's Management believes the number of people using iPhones and iPod Touches to consume podcasts and interact with Apps will continue to grow well beyond the current 50 million user base.
Having launched the first podcast App only 95 days ago, Wizzard Media already has launched 70 iPhone Apps with 60 more Apps awaiting approval. Additionally, Wizzard has exclusively licensed 12 high quality, game type Apps and is currently marketing them through targeted podcasts across the Wizzard Media Network. Select podcast Apps on the Wizzard Network have already helped to convert approximately 15% of their audience from free, to paid, in the first 75 days since launch.
"We think our podcast companion App initiative is a game changer for the podcasting industry. We believe the next great opportunity on the web for media is the seamless combination of three trends -- publishing services, advertising and micropayments for App sales," says Dave Mansueto, co-founder Wizzard Media. "Now, podcasting becomes a platform that converts audiences to revenue, accelerated by the micropayment billing process that Apple has created with the App store. We believe this new process is the model for how digital media is published, audiences are grown and revenues derived." "We know there is strong demand for the podcasts we distribute seeing downloads grow from 400 million to well over 1 billion in the last three years and monthly audiences grow from 4 million to 18 million," says Laurie Sims, President of Wizzard Media. "Now that we have a method to charge for podcast content and subscriptions, we believe there is dramatic change ahead for the podcast industry. Unlike most Apps in the App store, podcasters have a distinct advantage to successfully market their App in iTunes due to the fact that they have already built a substantial audience for their product through iTunes." About Wizzard Media: Wizzard Media provides publishing and distribution services to podcasters and monetization services for podcasters. Wizzard Media is the industry's leading podcasting network with an unprecedented 1.2 billion download requests in 2008. Podcasts are a means for independent and professional content creators to publish audio and video shows for the world to enjoy over the Internet or on mp3 players, such as the Apple iPod(R), iPhone(R) and the Microsoft Zune(R). Podcasting is a relatively new phenomenon, but Wizzard Media collectively broadcasts millions of podcast downloads per day through media aggregators like Apple's iTunes and Microsoft's Zune Marketplace. For more information, please visit www.wizzardsoftware.com/media . Wizzard Media is a division of Wizzard Software, a leader in speech technology distribution and development.

Westcode Announces New Insulated Water Cooler for Very Large Power Semiconductors
BIEL, Switzerland, Nov 05, 2009 -- IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ:IXYS) announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, Westcode Semiconductors Limited, has launched a new addition to its range of power semiconductor water coolers. The insulated Aluminium Nitride cooler has a 133mm diameter contact plate, making it suitable for press-pack devices with electrode contacts up to 125mm diameter.
The new coolers incorporate geometric water channels designs to ensure low values of thermal resistance even at moderate coolant flows, while retaining a robust structure compatible with the high clamping force required by large area power semiconductors. The geometric design used for the water channels also ensures a highly uniform cooling over the entire surface area. Typical cooler to input water thermal resistance for flow rate of 10 liters/minute are 5.2 Deg.K/kW (two coolers + 1 semiconductor) and 6.1 Deg.K/kW (three coolers + 2 semiconductors). Isolation voltage between water and the device is 10kV (RMS for 1minute).
"These isolated coolers allow the implementation of very high power density high voltage solutions, without the need for expensive and complex de-ionised water systems," commented Ashley Golland, Global High Power Applications Manager. "In applications such as traction drives, marine drives and wind turbines, the existing liquid coolant systems may be extended to the power electronics resulting in lower system cost, weight and noise levels and increased energy efficiency." The high quality surface finish, typical flatness 10 micrometers, makes the cooler ideal for use with Westcode's high performance Press-pack IGBTs (T1800EB45A, T2250AB25E & T2400EB45E). Additionally the coolers are suitable for use with all large area power devices, such as thyristors and Rectifier diodes, with contact electrodes from 90mm to 125mm diameter and clamping force up to 13 N per square millimeter. Amgen Announces Overall Survival Results for Vectibix(R) in First-Line Metastatic Colorectal Cancer --Phase 3 Results Reinforce Importance of KRAS Status
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Nov 05, 2009 via COMTEX/ -- Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN) today announced that the Phase 3 PRIME "203" trial evaluating Vectibix(R) (panitumumab) administered in combination with FOLFOX (an oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy) as a first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) failed to meet a secondary endpoint of overall survival. Earlier this year, it was announced that the trial met its primary endpoint by significantly prolonging progression-free survival (PFS) in the first-line treatment of patients with KRAS wild-type mCRC.
The prospective analysis of the 203 study showed that Vectibix, when added to a FOLFOX chemotherapy regimen in patients with KRAS wild-type mCRC, resulted in a median overall survival of 23.9 months compared to 19.7 months for patients treated with FOLFOX alone. The median overall survival difference of 4.2 months in the Vectibix arm did not reach statistical significance (HR=0.83, p=0.072).
"As we previously announced, the 203 study met its primary endpoint of progression-free survival in the first-line treatment of patients with KRAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer," said Roger M. Perlmutter, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president of Research and Development at Amgen. "While not statistically significant, we are also encouraged by the positive trend of the data for overall survival for these patients treated with Vectibix." Overall survival appeared to be reduced in patients with KRAS mutant tumors receiving Vectibix. Although not statistically significant, this result emphasizes the importance, as described in product labeling, of ensuring that patients receiving Vectibix( )do not bear tumors containing KRAS mutations.
Overall, the adverse event profile was as anticipated for an anti-EGFR antibody in combination with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy, including known events such as rash, diarrhea and hypomagnesemia. Vectibix-related grade 3 infusion reactions were reported for two patients (less than 1 percent).
Originally designed to compare the treatment effect in the overall population, the study was amended to analyze outcomes with respect to the presence or absence of activating mutations in KRAS in the tumor itself. Tumor KRAS status was ascertained in more than 90 percent of the 1,183 patients enrolled in the trial.
Available results from the trial were presented earlier this year at the 2009 ECCO 15 - ESMO 34 European Multidisciplinary Congress in Berlin, Germany showing that Vectibix significantly improved median progression-free survival by 1.6 months (9.6 versus 8.0 months for patients treated with FOLFOX alone, in patients with KRAS wild-type mCRC (primary endpoint). Further, the addition of Vectibix to chemotherapy also improved response rate in the KRAS wild-type patient population as measured by blinded central review (55 percent versus 48 percent in the FOLFOX only arm).
The data for the 203 study has been submitted for consideration of presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology - The Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium Meeting for 2010.
Study Design Patients enrolled in the "203" or PRIME trial (Panitumumab Randomized trial in combination with chemotherapy for Metastatic colorectal cancer to determine Efficacy) were randomized to receive either 6.0 mg/kg of Vectibix and FOLFOX4 once every two weeks (Q2W) or FOLFOX4 alone Q2W. The primary endpoint of the study is progression-free survival by KRAS status and secondary endpoints include overall survival, objective response rate, time to progression, duration of response and safety.
About KRAS Results from studies performed over the last twenty-five years indicate that KRAS plays an important role in cell growth regulation. In mCRC, EGFR transmits signals through a set of intracellular proteins. Upon reaching the nucleus, these signals instruct the cancer cell to reproduce and metastasize, leading to cancer progression. Anti-EGFR antibody therapies work by blocking the activation of EGFR, thereby inhibiting downstream events that lead to malignant signaling. However, it is hypothesized that in patients whose tumors harbor a mutated KRAS gene, the KRAS protein is always turned "on," regardless of whether the EGFR has been activated or therapeutically inhibited. KRAS mutations occur in approximately 40 - 50 percent of mCRC.
About Colorectal Cancer Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men and the third most common cancer in women worldwide. In 2007, approximately 1.2 million cases of colorectal cancer were expected to occur globally. With more than 630,000 deaths worldwide per year, it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. The highest incidence rates are found in Japan, North America, parts of Europe, New Zealand, and Australia, and rates are low in Africa and South-East Asia.( ) Rates are substantially higher in men than in women.
About Vectibix Vectibix is the first fully human anti-EGFR antibody approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of mCRC. Vectibix was approved in the United States in September 2006 as a monotherapy for the treatment of patients with EGFR expressing mCRC after disease progression on or following fluoropyrimidine-, oxaliplatin-, and irinotecan-containing chemotherapy regimens.
The effectiveness of Vectibix as a single agent for the treatment of EGFR-expressing, metastatic colorectal carcinoma is based on progression-free survival. Currently no data are available that demonstrate an improvement in disease-related symptoms or increased survival with Vectibix. Vectibix has not shown a treatment benefit for patients whose tumors had KRAS mutations in codon 12 or 13.
In December 2007, the EMEA granted a conditional marketing authorization for Vectibix as monotherapy for the treatment of patients with EGFR-expressing mCRC with wild-type KRAS genes after failure of standard chemotherapy regimens. Vectibix has been launched in over 20 countries, Switzerland, Australia and Canada. Applications in the rest of the world are pending.
Important Product Safety Information Dermatologic Toxicity: Dermatologic toxicities occurred in 89 percent of patients and were severe (NCI-CTC grade 3 and higher) in 12 percent of patients receiving Vectibix monotherapy. Withhold Vectibix for dermatologic toxicities that are grade 3 or higher or are considered intolerable. If toxicity does not improve to Infusion Reactions: Severe infusion reactions occurred in approximately 1 percent of patients. Severe infusion reactions included anaphylactic reactions, bronchospasm, and hypotension. Although not reported with Vectibix, fatal infusion reactions have occurred with other monoclonal antibody products. Stop infusion if a severe infusion reaction occurs. Depending on the severity and/or persistence of the reaction, permanently discontinue Vectibix.
