Cryptography Research Inks Agreement with STMicroelectronics - Zibb.com

Cryptography Research, Inc. (CRI) announced an agreement with STMicroelectronics regarding the use of CRI's patents for protecting ST's tamper-resistant chips against Differential Power Analysis (DPA) and related attacks.

Under the agreement, ST receives the freedom to use CRI's patents in ST's products. The license also covers software executing on licensed ST chips, allowing ST's customers to develop their own security countermeasures without a separate license from Cryptography Research.

"We are pleased to announce STMicroelectronics as a new licensee under the DPA countermeasures licensing program," said Carole Coplan, vice president of tamper resistance solutions at Cryptography Research.

DPA is a form of attack that involves monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of a target device and then using statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys and other secrets. Strong countermeasures to DPA help protect tamper-resistant chips used in applications such as banking, pay television, mass transit, secure ID and wireless telecommunications.

Cryptography Research has been awarded a portfolio of more than 50 patents covering countermeasures to DPA attacks.

STMicroelectronics Leads Drive to Better LED Signage for High-Resolution Viewing - Zibb.com

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a leading developer of semiconductors for LED lighting, has announced a new series of highly accurate LED drivers with automatic power saving, enabling electronic signage such as road signs, advertising, stadium displays, battery or solar-powered signs and similar equipment to deliver better, high-resolution viewing by ensuring consistent brightness across the viewing area.

The brightness of an LED is closely related to the drive current, usually supplied by a separate driver chip. As each new generation of LEDs produces greater brightness at lower drive current, overall efficiency is increasing but so, too, is the need for more accurate current control. This control is essential to prevent excessively bright or dark areas from damaging the visual effectiveness of signs and screens, which can employ tens of thousands of individual LEDs.

To provide the enhanced current control designers need, ST has introduced a family of driver chips capable of supplying 16 LED channels with driving capabilities of 3mA to 40mA and bit-to-bit accuracy within +/-1%. This accuracy is superior in tolerance to alternative drivers providing comparable drive current. In addition, as a large display may require several thousand drivers, ST's new devices also provides excellent current matching from chip to chip (+/-2%) to further enhance visual performance.

The new LED drivers are the STP16CPP05, STP16CPPS05, STP16DPP05 and STP16DPPS05. In addition to their enhanced current accuracy, they also provide optional features including ST-patented automatic power saving, as well as built-in LED error detection. Available variants allow designers to specify either or both of these value-added features, in a choice of four industry-standard package options.

The patented automatic power saving allows the drivers to turn off independently when no LED drive data is provided. This function delivers two benefits: software design is simplified as no power-save algorithm is required; and power savings are increased as the drivers turn off more quickly than is generally possible under software control.

Error detection helps to improve maintenance and boost productivity for signage operators. If an LED in the display fails, ST's LED drivers can detect either of the two possible failure modes (short circuit or open circuit) and communicate the failure to a central point. With this information, the system could be programmed to inform field maintenance crews of the necessary replacement parts in advance. In applications such as road signage, where reliability is critical, this feature can enable faults to be repaired quickly and efficiently.

The STP16CPP05, STP16CPPS05, STP16DPP05 and STP16DPPS05 are in mass production now, available at prices from $0.70 in quantities of 1000 devices.

PGI CUDA Fortran Now Available from The Portland Group - Zibb.com

The Portland Group(R), a wholly-owned subsidiary of STMicroelectronics, today announced the general availability of its CUDA Fortran compiler for x64 and x86 processor-based systems running Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. Developed in collaboration with NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the inventor of the graphics processing unit (GPU), PGI Release 2010 includes the first Fortran compiler compatible with the NVIDIA line of CUDA-enabled GPUs. A compiler is a software tool that translates applications from the high-level programming languages in which they are written by software developers into a binary form a computer can execute.

With developers taking advantage of the hundreds of cores and the relatively low cost of NVIDIA GPUs, programming to take advantage of the CUDA C compiler has become a popular means for accelerating the solution of complex computing problems. The PGI CUDA Fortran compiler is expected to accelerate GPU adoption even further in the High-Performance Computing (HPC) industry, where many important applications are written in Fortran. HPC is the field of technical computing engaged in the modeling and simulation of complex processes, such as ocean modeling, weather forecasting, environmental modeling, seismic analysis, bioinformatics and other areas.

"The GPU is ideally suited for the computationally intensive applications that define the HPC industry," said Andy Keane, general manager, Tesla business at NVIDIA. "The industry has been vocal in expressing its need for a CUDA-compatible Fortran option. NVIDIA customers can now build native CUDA Fortran applications using the widely-used and long-proven PGI Fortran compiler."

The CUDA Fortran compiler is compatible with all NVIDIA GPUs that include Compute Capability 1.3 or higher, which includes most NVIDIA Quadro Professional Graphics solutions and all NVIDIA Tesla GPU Computing solutions. Developers are invited to download the PGI CUDA Fortran compiler from The Portland Group website at www.pgroup.com/support/downloads.php.

A 15-day trial license is available at no charge. In an effort to simplify adoption, NVIDIA has granted PGI rights to redistribute the relevant components of the CUDA Software Development Kit (SDK) as part of the PGI CUDA Fortran installation package.

PGI(R) products are used widely in high-performance computing (HPC). PGI compilers are recognized in the HPC community for delivering world-class performance across a wide spectrum of applications and benchmarks, and they are referenced regularly as the industry standard for performance and reliability. More information on the CUDA Fortran compiler is available directly from The Portland Group web site at www.pgroup.com/cudafortran.

GPU computing forums for news, discussion and programming tips are available at forums.nvidia.com and www.pgroup.com/userforum.
