MILPITAS, Calif., Nov 03, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK), the global leader in flash memory cards, today announced that the 64-gigabyte (GB)(1) SanDisk(R) pSSD(TM) Gen2 solid state drive was selected by Sony as the SSD of choice for its new VAIO X ultra-thin laptop.
Solid State Drives (SSD) use no moving parts, enabling improved durability that helps prevent data loss resulting from drive failure. Computers with SSD run quieter and cooler, and use less power than conventional hard disk drives (HDD). The SanDisk pSSD drive's small size complements ultra-thin laptops with small form factor requirements.
The SanDisk pSSD offers several features that contribute to the extreme thinness and long battery life of this lightweight Windows 7 notebook. The pSSD's compact size (weighing only 7.1 grams and measuring 54mm x 32mm x 4.4mm) and LIF PATA interface are well-suited to Sony's particular form factor requirement. In addition, the drive's power consumption (average power of 0.15W(2)) is significantly lower than that of a traditional hard disk drive.
SanDisk's modular solid state drive, SanDisk pSSD, offers 9,000 vRPM(3) of performance and has the added benefit of employing nCache(TM) technology, a large non-volatile write cache technology that boosts burst random write performance up to three times over steady state performance and up to 20 times faster than pSSD Gen1 to further enhance the user experience(4). nCache technology improves user responsiveness and helps prevent incidence of drive "stalling".
"The release of Sony's VAIO X symbolizes a market shift towards pioneering flash-based laptop designs, eliminating the weight and size constraints of the legacy hard disk drive," said Doreet Oren, director product marketing, solid state drives, SanDisk. "The SanDisk pSSD drive enables laptops to be thinner and lighter, while eliminating the mechanical slow downs and malfunctions most commonly attributed to the hard disk drive."
"The selection of SanDisk pSSD drives by tier-1 OEMs for the newest small, thin and light-weight laptop designs is a vote of confidence for not only SanDisk solutions, but also for the potential of SSDs to move the computing market light years forward," said Jim McGregor, analyst at In-Stat, a Reed Business independent industry research firm. "PC OEMs understand the performance and power consumption benefits of SSDs and are working hard to bring these solutions quickly and affordably to the end user."
SanDisk pSSD Gen2 drives support Windows XP, Linux, and Windows 7, the OS of choice for the Sony VAIO X laptop. SanDisk pSSD Gen 2 comes in a variety of PATA and SATA interfaces and is available to OEMs in capacities that range from 8GB to 64GB. More information about SanDisk pSSD products is available at: www.sandisk.com/pssd

PRINCETON, N.J., Nov 02, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Next Inning Technology Research (http://www.nextinning.com), an online investment newsletter focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has updated outlooks for SanDisk (Nasdaq: SNDK), Micron (NYSE: MU), Microsemi (Nasdaq: MSCC), OmniVision Technologies (Nasdaq: OVTI) and Diodes, Inc. (Nasdaq: DIOD).
In a repeat of his July performance, Editor Paul McWilliams was spot on during the October earnings season. Not only did he peg the numbers at Intel, SanDisk and Apple again, his accuracy has been so uncanny it led one of his readers to comment, "It's almost as though Paul wrote the scripts."

McWilliams covers these topics and more in his recent reports:
-- McWilliams encouraged readers to buy SanDisk when it was trading in single digits last December. His thesis then was clear -- NAND Flash would see a resurgence in demand during the second half of 2010 and that would absorb excess capacity. It looked as though Wall Street was catching on for a while, but something changed. Does McWilliams still think there is 50% or more upside from here or is it time to take profits?
-- After ranking Micron a buy last March at $3.56, McWilliams advised readers it was time to sell in September when the stock moved into the $8s. After reviewing the situation and checking with his field contacts, does McWilliams think it's time to give Micron another spin?
-- With nearly a third of its price covered by the value of its balance sheet, is Microsemi now trading at a bargain price? Does McWilliams expect Microsemi's upcoming earnings report to exceed analysts' expectations?
-- In December, McWilliams pointed to OmniVision as "a clear value" when it was trading in the $5 range. Following this he suggested selling in the mid-teens. Now that the price has dropped back into the $12s, does McWilliams think that persistent shortages will bode well enough for the company during its October quarter to merit buying again?
-- Diodes Inc. was trading in the mid-$4s when McWilliams suggested buying the stock last December and was over $20 when he said it was time to take profits. Now that the stock has slumped back to the $16s, should investors buy it ahead of its earnings report today? Will Diodes top expectations?
Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 200% since its inception versus 15% for the S&P 500.
