Soccer - Ouma's Brace Keeps Mathare United On Top - Zibb.com
Nairobi, Jul 22, 2008 (The Nation/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
Francis Ouma kept Mathare's quest for their first Premier League title alive with a brace that sunk Sher Karuturi at the weekend.
Mathare stayed at the top of the league with a one-point advantage over Sony Sugar after their 2-0 win at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
After 13 matches, Mathare United top the standings with 28 points, one better than Sony.
Apart from enjoying a one-point lead with two matches at hand, Mathare have outscored other sides, with 25 goals. They and are only rivalled by seventh-placed Western Stima.
"We are not taking chances, we have to keep on scoring, just in case the title is decided on points," Mathare coach Francis Kimanzi said.
Sony Sugar, the 2006 champions, had a laboured 1-0 victory over Bandari in Awendo.
It was a welcome result for coach Francis Baraza, whose side had squandered a chance to overtake Mathare last weekend when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sher.
Zakayo Kisekeli scored the lone goal for Sony, who have 27 points from 15 games.
They are two ahead of World Hope, who won 1-0 away in Chemelil.
World Hope's new boy, Ken Oliech, recruited from Gor Mahia a fortnight ago, scored the all-important goal for John Bobby Ogolla's side.
"It gives me a sigh of relief to get the points especially after we had dropped six on the trot," Ogolla said Monday.
With champions Tusker still busy in Tanzania, where they are involved in the East and Central Africa Club Championships, Kenya Commercial Bank took advantage and leapt to the fourth spot with 22 points after a barren draw in Muhoroni against Agro Chemicals.
Thika United continued their poor showing with a 2-3 loss at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega to Western Stima.
The result pushed Western Stima to eighth with 19 points, one ahead of Thika United, who are tenth after Gor Mahia.
Concern is meanwhile growing over the performance of forces sides Ulinzi and Red Berets, who are flirting with relegation alongside bottom placed Mahakama.
Ulinzi, champions in 2004 and 2005, were held to a barren draw by Mathare Youth to move just a point above the drop zone.
