Responding to the performance demands of dynamic, terabit-capacity data centers, Spirent Communications, a provider of enterprise network testing, introduced the Spirent HyperMetrics 2/4/8Gb Fibre Channel test module.
Spirent said that by leveraging a holistic, unified test system, data center operators, network equipment vendors and system integrators can test every aspect of tomorrow's converged networks pre and post deployment.
"With data center applications pushing the need for greater and faster storage while increasing connectivity efficiencies, it's vital to test the performance of new converged FCoE and native Fibre Channel networks and switches," said Tim Jefferson, general manager, Converged Core Solutions group, Spirent Communications. "Spirent has been pioneer in Fibre Channel testing for more than a decade and is now driving a new set of benchmarking methodologies to meet the requirements of a new generation of data center implementations."
The 2/4/8 Gigabit HyperMetrics Fibre Channel test module enables developers and IT managers to understand performance at true data center scale and identifies issues before they impact the live network. In conjunction with Spirent HyperMetrics 10GbE Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) test module, the Fibre Channel solution delivers what Spirent called the industry's first layer 2-7 converged data center performance benchmarking test system.
Spirent reported that the HyperMetrics Fibre Chanel module is specifically designed to.
-Give engineers a complete picture of the end-to-end performance across the Fibre Channel to FCoE boundary;
-Compare FCoE versus native Fibre Channel data center network performance;
-Measure and validate low latency performance required by data storage applications from FCoE to FC and FC to FCoE at various rates up to the throughput limit; and
-Validate lossless data transfers under congestion between FCoE per Priority Flow Control (PFC) and Fibre Channel buffer and credit mechanisms.

Spirent Tech-X Flex((TM)) Adds Copper, DSL Modules to Handheld Tool's Wide-Reaching Resources
Spirent Communications plc (LSE: SPT), a leader in network, services and device testing, today announced the addition of copper and DSL modules for its market leading Spirent Tech-X Flex(TM). The new wideband copper and ADSL / VDSL2 modules extend the reach of Spirent Tech-X Flex to the last mile providing a solution that enables service providers to confidently roll out new services with fewer quality issues and complaints.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090812/SPIRENTLOGO )
"Spirent continues to demonstrate why its testing solutions remain the preferred equipment of choice not just in the lab but also in the field in live networks such as outside plant and residential settings," said Sean Yarborough, director of strategy and business development, Spirent. "We offer the industry's smallest and most ergonomic tool for field testing while delivering modules that allow for the use of a single, compact device that ultimately reduces the cost and training efforts compared with conventional devices."
As more technicians are tasked with tackling problems both inside and outside the home, Spirent Tech-X Flex allows service issues to be resolved quickly. This approach is particularly important with ADSL2+ and VDSL2 deployments as it becomes critical that service providers deliver sufficient bandwidth into the home to offer a seamless multiplay experience.
Spirent Tech-X Flex's unique on-board expert analysis features provide technicians with the power of Spirent's award winning technical expertise and experience allowing them to make better and more informed assessments. This ultimately leads to faster repair times and returns revenue generating copper pairs back into service as soon as possible.
The DSL module offers a single solution for field testing ADSL-based and VDSL2 services with multi-vendor interoperability for many chipsets including Infineon, Broadcom, Ikanos and Conexant. As service providers migrate from ADSL-based services to VDSL2, Tech-X Flex allows for the continued use of a single solution helping to reduce or even eliminate additional purchases of test equipment. In addition Tech-X Flex provides technicians with a method of verifying that the data rates into the home are suitable for the delivery of high bandwidth services such as IPTV. The solution can also be used to determine if data service is operating correctly by way of the on board Web browser. Spirent's active Web browser allows Web connectivity to be checked over the DSL interface which helps sectionalize problems should they occur elsewhere in the home or other dwelling.
The copper module provides a range of comprehensive tests that allow technicians to test standard voice services as well as troubleshoot and maintain wideband services up to 30MHz which are required for the delivery of triple play services. Spirent's Advanced Impulse Noise Capture test, for example, allows technicians to capture information on electrical noise and its impact on DSL service so that further analysis can be carried out to identify the source of the interference.
Spirent Tech-X Flex offers the industry's most comprehensive handheld tester which allows field technicians to qualify and troubleshoot service-related issues within the consumer's home and the outside plant. Sarance Technologies, a provider of interconnect IP technology, and Spirent Communications, have announced a licensing agreement to incorporate Sarance's high speed ethernet IP core 40G and 100G IP products in Spirent TestCenter.
The high speed ethernet IP (HSEC) is available as soft core for Virtex-5 TXT and Virtex-6 LXT FPGAs and Altera Stratix IV GT and Altera Stratix IV GX FPGAs, as well as for ASIC implementations. It has also been implemented and validated in 65nm and 40nm process technologies. The IP is delivered as a netlist targeted for the specific FPGA architecture, or as RTL code that can be implemented in any ASIC process technology.
Farhad Shafai, vice president of R&D at Sarance Technologies, said: "Sarance's 100G and 40G ethernet cores have already been licensed by networking companies and have gone through rigorous testing by passing live internet traffic.
"The adoption of the same cores by a major test equipment vendor like Spirent further validates the robustness of Sarance IP and provides the quickest path for network equipment vendors to get their products to the market. We're excited to be working with Spirent and to accelerate the deployment of 100G and 40G equipment."
