Telekom Austria has started to expand its VDSL2 network to rural areas in Austria in the beginning of November, currently connecting around 275,000 households. The so-called Giganetz will connect around 365,000 in the beginning of 2010 and the operator aims for 750,000 households. The Giganetz offers customers to order GigaSpeed 30, that increases the download and upload speed of their existing ADSL connection to 30/3 Mbps for EUR 14.90 per month extra. The speed option is available for existing users of Telekom Austria DSL services or new customers. If they sign up until 1 February 2010, the first three months will be free and the activation fee of EIR 29.90 will be dropped as well. The operator also announced the appointment of Christian Bauer as marketing retail director. He will be responsible for all marketing and product management for residential and business customers at Telekom Austria fixed network division.

Telekom Austria denies media reports that it already has decided to merge its Austrian fixed and mobile operations, following examples from other European operators. The board said in a statement that the supervisory board discussed possible scenarios during its meeting on 11 November and has now asked management to look into potential strategic options in detail and to evaluate their advantages and disadvantages. The results of this analysis will be discussed by the management and supervisory board in their next meetings. Telekom Austria Group wants to emphasize that the result of this evaluation is open.

Telekom Austria's fixed network division saw its revenues drop 5.3 percent to EUR 470.7 million in the third quarter compared with the same quarter in 2008. The decline was mainly driven by a lower voice volume and a lower number of access lines resulting in lower revenues from Access, Voice & Broadband. Furthermore lower revenues from Data and Wholesale Voice & Internet contributed to the decrease in revenues. The average revenues per fixed net access line (ARPL) declined by 4.4 percent to EUR 34.9 in Q3 2009 compared to EUR 36.5 in Q3 2008. The EBITDA decreased by 4.9 percent to EUR 157.9 million, mitigated by 1.2 percent lower operating expenses and an one-off reimbursement from the government of EUR 10.2 million. The operating profit rose by 11.2 percent to EUR 52.7 million, due lower depreciation and amortization charges. At the same time, the number of fixed lines decreased by 27,700 during the quarter to 1.32 million, while the DSL customer base grew by 17.6 percent year-on-year to 982,600 including 56,600 wholesale DSL customers (down 17.9%).
