HERNDON, Va., Oct 19, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Wireless Matrix (TSX:WRX) announced today that it has extended its relationship with a long-time rail industry customer to provide multi-mode communications across the company's locomotive fleet.
The agreement, which extends the relationship between the companies through September 2011, provides for integrated cellular and satellite service to over 3,000 locomotives outfitted with the Wireless Matrix MBS II for Rail, the company's ruggedized communications platform for the rail industry.
Under the agreement, the railroad will utilize greater communications bandwidth in its locomotive operations. Michael Jakab, vice-president of sales and marketing for Wireless Matrix said, "The deployment of on-board applications supporting initiatives for location-based data and fuel usage have driven a greater reliance on wireless communications." This higher utilization is expected to drive increased per-unit revenue for Wireless Matrix over the life of the agreement.
"The rail industry continues to be a significant contributor to Wireless Matrix's ongoing success," said J. Richard Carlson, president and CEO of Wireless Matrix. "We're pleased to provide key components that support the operational efficiency goals of this important, long-time rail customer."

Wireless Matrix announced the release of its TechDirect solution for representing work orders on a map, now available for general subscription.
Wireless Matrix explained that TechDirect is a tool within FleetOutlook for marrying workforce management data to the real-time locations of mobile assets. TechDirect adds value to a traditional workforce management solution by overlaying key work order data from the workforce management application with real-time vehicle location intelligence on a single FleetOutlook map. By combining work order information with vehicle location, dispatchers and field service managers can reduce the frequency with which they "swivel chair" between the workforce management application and FleetOutlook. TechDirect provides one centralized view at the dispatchers' fingertips for more efficient routing, scheduling and dispatch. This approach provides dispatchers and field service managers with the visibility they need for smart decision-making.
Wireless Matrix said that benefits include:
- Reduce the need to "swivel chair." Reduce the lost productivity caused by switching between the workforce management application and FleetOutlook by using one centralized view causing less confusion and fewer mistakes.
- Manage drivers using one view that shows both vehicle data and work order data. Click on the vehicle icon to see work order data, including job identification, job status and type, job time window and customer address.
- Stop relying on drivers to report back arrival and departure times. Using TechDirect, dispatchers and field service managers have arrival and departure times based on real-time GPS data for accurate reporting and compliance.
"TechDirect tightly integrates two types of data sets: location-based data from FleetOutlook and work order data from a workforce management solution," said Adam Wegel, Wireless Matrix's senior director of product management. "This breakthrough solution enhances the value of both solutions by providing a visual comparison of the technician's actual route in real-time versus the scheduled route on a single FleetOutlook map. TechDirect further strengthens Wireless Matrix's leadership position in managing on-time service execution and schedule compliance using location-based intelligence."
Future phases of TechDirect will offer users enhanced methods to represent schedules and assign work to drivers - all on one centralized map view.

Wireless Matrix has announced that its Vehicle Maintenance Module will be available for subscription beginning October 19, 2009.
The company has said that the Vehicle Maintenance Module automatically tracks not only calendar days but also the elapsed mileage and engine hours using an in-vehicle GPS device. The results are then displayed on the vehicle maintenance dashboard. Users will be able to see which vehicles are due for maintenance and which are past due.
The next release of the solution, scheduled for winter 2010, will add additional functionality to the vehicle dashboard as well as advanced analytics and reporting.
Adam Wegel, senior director of product management at Wireless Matrix, said: "The Vehicle Maintenance Module greatly enhances fleet managers' ability to proactively monitor, measure and manage the maintenance of the vehicles in their fleets. The innovative module empowers fleet managers to maximize the operational availability of their mobile assets and eliminates the need for manual maintenance tracking and paperwork."
