HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTE Braze Alloy For Carbide Tipped Tools It has come to the attention ofTecvac Personnel that some cutting tool manufacturers, when joining carbide tips to holders, are using brazing alloys which are not compatible with vacuum processing. This practice results in leaching of some of the elements during high vacuum processing leading to the following detrimental effects 1. A reduction in the strength of the brazed joint 2. Deposition of the leached elements on the chamber wall 3. The potential for contamination or poor adhesion of the immediate and subsequent component batches The main elements of a braze alloy which lead to problems under vacuum conditions are Zinc and Cadmium, thus braze alloys containing these constituents must be avoided. Please ensure that any composite tools which are sent to Tecvac for coating are brazed with suitable vacuum compatible alloy. For further technical advice please contact : Tecva
