The adhesive of this alga is shown to comprise sulfated glycoproteins assembled into co-ordinated nanofibers through cross-linking by Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. The assembled nanofiber enables the synchronized unfolding and refolding of domains in adjacent protein backbones.

AFM demonstrated that EDTA treatment of native T. undulatum adhesive resulted in rapid disruption of the adhesive nanofiber (ANF) structure but ANFs were restored by subsequent treatment (within 1 h) with solutions containing divalent cations.
