MontaVista Mobilinux for Texas Instruments OMAP3430 Processor Unveiled at Embedded Systems Conference

At the Embedded Systems Conference, MontaVista(R) Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux(R) commercialization, has unveiled a new MontaVista Mobilinux package to optimize the development of Linux-based mobile devices on the high-performance Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP3430 applications processor. In MontaVista's booth, developers will be able to interact with Mobilinux integrated with a leading mobile software stack running on an OMAP3430 processor-based mobile phone board.

MontaVista Mobilinux is an optimized Linux operating system with development tools for designing wireless handsets, and other mobile devices such as MIDs (mobile Internet devices), GPS devices, portable medical products, and automotive infotainment. According to a research report published earlier this year by the Mobile Consumer Lab of the International University of Japan, "MontaVista Mobilinux currently dominates the Linux market for wireless devices, having implemented over 90 percent of Linux-based smartphones shipped in 2007."

The first device in TI's OMAP(TM) 3 architecture, the OMAP3430 multimedia applications processor delivers up to 3x gain in performance over ARM11-based processors, enabling laptop-like productivity and advanced entertainment in 3G handsets. The OMAP3430 is the first applications processor to integrate the ARM(R) Cortex(TM)-A8 superscalar microprocessor core. Combined with TI's technology in the OMAP3430 processor, the ARM Cortex-A8 enables faster user interfaces, faster data access, and boosts productivity and entertainment applications on the mobile phone, while maintaining power efficiencies expected in a handset.

"We have customers already building designs with Mobilinux 5.0 on the OMAP3430 processor, including a large mobile phone manufacturer, a major automobile manufacturer, and others," explained Patrick MacCartee, director of product management, MontaVista Software. "When developers leverage the OMAP3430's high-performance and high-definition video capabilities along with Mobilinux's integration and support, they will be able to build slick multimedia applications very quickly."

"MontaVista's Mobilinux demonstration gives developers first-hand proof of the increased design options that are now available for new mobile multimedia applications," said Markus Tremmel, worldwide wireless ecosystem manager, Wireless Terminals Business Unit, Texas Instruments. "Mobile applications engineers now have the opportunity to combine the quality of Mobilinux with the high performance and capabilities of TI's OMAP3430 processor."

MontaVista Mobilinux 5.0 for the Texas Instruments OMAP3430 processor is available today directly from MontaVista.
