HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER ALERT
DAY SIX: BOEHNER, HOUSE REPUBLICANS VOW CONTINUED FIGHT FOR A HOUSE VOTE TO LOWER GAS PRICES
AT PRESS CONFERENCE, BOEHNER, PENCE, & PORTER JOIN HOUSE REPUBLICANS TO REITERATE DEMAND FOR SPEAKER PELOSI TO RECONVENE THE HOUSE & ALLOW UP-OR-DOWN VOTE ON THE AMERICAN ENERGY ACT
August 8, 2008
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH), Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), Rep. Jon Porter (R-NV) and other House Republicans held a press conference this morning reiterating demands for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to reconvene the House to have an up-or-down vote on the American Energy Act to help lower gas prices for American working families and small businesses. Leader Boehner rejoined his colleagues today in the historic GOP energy protest that has been gaining strength since it began one week ago.
REPUBLICAN LEADER JOHN BOEHNER (R-OH):
"American families are being crushed by high gasoline prices. Small businesses are being damaged. And yet the speaker of the House will not call us back here to deal with the number one issue in the country. Now, 834 days ago then-Minority Leader of the House Nancy Pelosi said, 'I have a common-sense plan to lower gas prices.' 834 days we've still not seen this plan. About 108 days ago, on April 22nd this year, I sent the Speaker a letter asking to see the common-sense plan to lower gas prices. I've yet to receive a response... The American people sent us here to represent their interest. We're here, and we're going to continue to be here day after day until the Speaker calls us back, because that's what our constituents are demanding. We're here representing their interests."
REPRESENTATIVE MIKE PENCE (R-IN):
"Our message to Speaker Nancy Pelosi is this: Call this Congress back into session immediately and give the bipartisan majority of men and women in this Congress who support more drilling, more conservation, more alternative sources of energy a vote. Our message to our colleagues in the House Democratic Conference is this: Join us. We know many House Democrats believe in a comprehensive energy strategy that would give the American people more access to our own domestic reserves. We invite you to call on your own Speaker to bring this Congress back into session. We invite you to come to this floor and join us on behalf of the American people."
REPRESENTATIVE JON PORTER (R-NV):
"We have some unique challenges in the great state of Nevada. Not only is this fuel crisis about the cost at the pump, it's costing jobs in Nevada. People are looking at their budgets. Can they afford to fly" Can they afford to drive" Should they stay home?... We're here today to ask Nancy Pelosi to call members of Congress back, because in my 25 years as a public servant, a city councilman, a mayor, a state senator, I have never seen a crisis of this magnitude... And we are simply asking the Democrat Congress, led by Nancy Pelosi, that she comes back from her book tour, she brings her private jet back to Washington, D.C., and she calls for a vote by this House of Representatives. It's now - it's now or it's never."
