'Junior,' 'Surgeon' top Hot Docs Festival

The top prizes in this year's Hot Docs Festival in Toronto went to the movies "Junior" and "The English Surgeon," event presenters announced.
"Surgeon" was awarded the festival's International Feature award, while "Junior" was named the best Canadian Feature, Variety reported Friday.
"Surgeon" follows a medical collaboration involving British brain surgeon Henry Marsh, while "Junior" represented a drama involving young hockey players.
The HBO Documentary Film Emerging Artist Award was presented to Bulgarian filmmaker Boris Despodov. The director won for his film "Corridor #8," which was part of his involvement with the festival's International Spectrum program.
Nik Sheehan's film "FlicKeR," about the life of artist Brion Gysin, won the special jury prize for a Canadian feature.
Variety said the Friday event's outstanding achievement award went to cinematographer Richard Leacock, while "Up the Yangtze" director Yung Chang won the Don Haig Award for blending non-fiction and fiction in a Canadian film.
