Davao dad wants Davao River in RP's river basin list
DAVAO CITY, Sep 11, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
City Council environment committee chair Leonardo Avila III wants the Davao River be included in the list of priority river basins in the country.
Avila cited in his recent resolution that the river's significance as Davao City's landmark and being Mindanao's third largest river catchments as basis for requesting President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's declaration.
"The Davao River Watershed is the biggest among the eight watersheds in the city. There is a need to protect the watershed areas and aquifers including the surface water sources like rivers and creek that are vital to public health, welfare and economic development," he said.
Should the National Government declare Davao River as a priority, it will receive a funding allocation for its preservation, he added. LDV/ASA/lvp
