Sundance DSP8080-AIMM is Ready to Combat Communication Interference
RENO, Nev., June 16, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Sundance DSP, a worldwide supplier and manufacturer of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) and reconfigurable computing platforms, advanced IP cores, libraries and tools today announced the availability of its DSP8080-AIMM (Altitude Interference Mitigation Module) system. This advanced solution is designed for combating communication interferences from unwanted sources. Based on the system architecture and algorithms provided by the US Navy Advanced Technology Engineering Group at SPAWAR Systems Center Charleston, the DSP8080 is a complete solution utilizing the performance of a light weight, multi-DSP/ FPGA hardware platform with many built-in sophisticated algorithms implemented as either IP cores on FPGAs or optimized DSP code targeting the floating and fixed point DSPs present in the system. DSP8080-AIMM currently interfaces to the WinRadio WR526 coherent tuners, but is versatile enough to work with many other brands.
The Sundance DSP solution is one of the lowest cost and compact hardware architectures available on the market that can accommodate beam forming of a high quantity of digital drop receivers (> 100 channels). This technology improves the warfighter's battle space awareness from a signal surveillance perspective without being jammed by a high density of signals outside the area of interest. With some calibration, it provides radio direction finding and geo-location by-product.
Mr. Bogdan Vacaliuc, CTO of Sundance explained that, "this work was a major breakthrough in electronic warfare. Never before could a system in a ship, tank or aircraft understand the source of a signal and provide evasive operations with so many channels and with such pinpoint accuracy. A system with our unique capabilities can help customers to develop their own application in record times."
The DSP8080 utilizes multiple high-performance DSPs from Texas Instruments (TI), including the TMS320C6416, a fixed-point processor running at 1 GHz, and the TMS320C6713, a floating-point DSP. The system also utilizes several Virtex 4 SX55 Xilinx FPGAs. The programming of such complex mix of hardware technologies was only possible with the use of a tool like PARS.
"Sundance's DSP8080 benefits from the industry-leading processing capabilities offered by TI's high-performance DSPs," said Jacob Alamat, marketing manager for highperformance processors, Texas Instruments. "The programmability and flexibility offered by TI's DSPs allows for custom coding and advanced algorithms to help identify the appropriate communication frequencies and we're proud to be part of this unique solution for the Navy."
Mr. Ian Land, Senior Marketing Manager, Xilinx Aerospace and Defense stated, "Sundance has put together a high-performance computing platform in an innovative software-defined radio application. Xilinx FPGAs were used for a high-performance computing function with parallel processing capability that could not be matched by digital signal processors."
For the first time the solution was showcased at a military conference in USA on Feb 20-22 2008. Further demonstrations at other major events are planned for the remainder of this year.
