MontaVista Software, Inc., a provider of embedded Linux commercialization, announced support for the Octeon II Processors from Cavium Networks.
MontaVista Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) is qualified as the only Linux distribution that supports Cavium Networks MIPS64 family of processors, and has registered compliance with the Linux Foundation's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 specification.
As a Cavium PACE (Partnership to Accelerate Customer End-solutions) member, only MontaVista Carrier Grade Edition can provide carrier grade features needed for intelligent network applications and to interoperate with software and hardware. MontaVista said its CGE is the only Linux in the world that complies with three standards: Carrier Grade Linux 4.0 registration, LSB 3.0 certification, and IPv6 logo certification. In addition to its feature-set, MontaVista Linux brings commercial-grade quality, integration, hardware enablement, support, and the resources of the MontaVista development community to developers using Cavium Octeon II multicore processors.
"MontaVista customers using Cavium Network multicore processors include many of the world's largest manufacturers of network equipment," said Joerg Berthold, VP of Marketing for MontaVista Software. "The Octeon II family of processors incorporates advanced multi-layer application acceleration for networking control, data and services applications. These processors have low power consumption levels while delivering unprecedented performance to enable real-time applications such as Layer 2-7 packet processing, which are supported by the real-time capabilities of MontaVista Linux."
"We have multiple network equipment provider (NEP) customers that specifically request MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition due to its proven quality and reliability," YJ Kim, Senior Director, Embedded Processor Group, Cavium Networks. "We have worked closely with MontaVista to ensure MontaVista Linux enables our customers' design teams to exploit the high-performance of Octeon II family processors for control and data plane applications while providing the high level of reliability required by telecom and wireless carriers."
The recently announced Cavium Networks Octeon II Internet Application Processor (IAP) family is designed for Hypernetworks serving enterprise, data center, access and service provider markets which require support for converged data, voice and video. The Octeon II target applications include switches, routers, appliances, equipment for 3G, WiMAX, LTE, wireless LAN, and unified storage systems and adapters. The Octeon II family integrates 1 to 32 MIPS64 cores, up to 75 Application Acceleration Engines for quality of service, packet processing, TCP, compression, encryption, RAID, de-duplication and regular expression processing, up to 400Gbps of DDR3 memory bandwidth, and up to 100Gbps of network connectivity while consuming only 2W to 60W across the entire family.
