Holcim and LGU partner in waste disposal

? Bulacan?s capital, Malolos City, may be a good model for other cities to follow in effective waste management.

The Malolos City government recently signed a partnership with leading cement company Holcim Philippines for the proper and safe disposal of its sorted residual wastes using Holcim?s global technology of co-processing at its Bulacan Plant.

The memorandum of agreement (MOA) was recently signed by Malolos City Mayor Danilo Domingo and Holcim Philippines Alternative Fuel and Raw Materials (AFR) Vice President Ernesto Paredes.

Waste segregation is a mandate that many local governments have yet to fully comply with. Through the recently-signed MOA, the Malolos City Government goes a step further, ensuring that segregated wastes are put into productive use in a manner that is environmentally safe.

?We hope this project between Holcim and the Malolos City government can demonstrate that we now have a safe and environment-friendly solution to waste management,? said Paredes.

?Co-processing waste materials has been done successfully in several European countries and in the United States for many years now, and Holcim has developed the capability and knowhow to replicate this in our country,? he said.

Holcim?s co-processing technology makes use of non-recyclable, non-biodegrable municipal wastes which usually end in dumpsites, posing health and environment hazards. This technology is quickly gaining acceptance, with several municipalities already partnering with Holcim for effective waste management. Among the cities that are now benefiting from Holcim?s co-processing capability are the cities of Marikina, Makati and Baguio.

Holcim?s cement plants have complete state-of-the-art Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) device to ensure on a 24/7 basis that no harmful emissions are released to the environment, and that the provisions of the Philippine Clean Air Act are strictly complied with.
