Last Updated: May 15th, 2009: 4:40 PM ET---The major US equity indices closed in the red Friday, although off session lows, as investors remained cautious following a number of economic reports that failed to instill conviction. Nine out of ten major economic sectors settled with losses, with financials (-2.4%) and utilities (-2.4%) leading the decline, meanwhile, the consumer goods sector was the only name to close just above the unchanged level. The Dow Jones Industrial average fell 0.8% to settle at 8,269, the S&P 500 fell 1.1%, to 883, and the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.5%, to settle at 1,680.
