Procter and Gamble Pakistan launches Social Commitment Report

Procter & Gamble Pakistan today launched its first Social Commitment Report, highlighting the companys long-term commitment to its contribution to community development in Pakistan.

P&G Pakistan has a strong commitment towards helping children in need through the P&G Live, Learn and Thrive global cause, and this report outlines P&G Pakistans initiatives undertaken in line with this global cause for improvement in the health, education and life skills development amongst children.

Speaking at the occasion, Country Manager P&G Pakistan, Qaisar Shareef said: Children are the future of our nation and therefore it is essential to invest in their development. We believe that if given the right support and opportunities, children will bring about a positive difference in the country. In Pakistan, our Live, Learn and Thrive community development programs, undertaken both on a corporate level as well as integrated within our brands, have helped improve the lives of about 5 million Pakistanis in FY 07/08.

P&G has developed a low-cost technology called PuR water purifier sachets that purifies contaminated drinking water to make it safe for drinking. PuR is currently manufactured at the P&G Hub Plant in Pakistan and exported across the globe; to date providing over a billion litres of clean drinking water. P&G Pakistan is the first and only manufacturer of this product in the world and gives our country the pride and privilege to play a role in helping those in need, added Qaisar.

Highlighting P&Gs long term commitment to Social Development in Pakistan and across the world, Yassin Al-Attas, External Relations Director for Arabian Peninsula and Pakistan said, At P&G, we strive to empower communities by building long-term partnerships with various expert organizations in order to make a deep and meaningful impact and in Pakistan we have partnered with numerous local and national organizations.

The P&G Pakistan Social Commitment Report for 2008 is in essence a tribute to all our partnerships as it marks our achievements in community development together. We have proudly reached over 150 million children across the world through our global corporate cause, Live, Learn, Thrive, and are committed to touch the lives of many more in the years to come.

P&G has been involved in several long-term Community Development programs, including The establishment of 60 P&G-HOPE Home Schools in Karachi and Thatta and 2 P&G-READ Foundation schools in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. These schools are currently educating over 4000 underprivileged children.

In Pakistan, the Safeguard School Education Program has reached 5 million children to date with the message of Health and Hygiene. Pampers Hospital Education Program has educated over 5.6 million mothers to date on healthy baby care practices. Furthermore, the Always School Education Program has reached 4 million young girls to date on personal hygiene. P&G Pakistan recently broke ground for a P&G Home in partnership with SOS Childrens Villages of Pakistan.

The event was well attended by P&G partners with representation from READ Foundation, HOPE, SOS Childrens Villages of Pakistan, Pakistan Medical Association, Infectious Diseases Society of Pakistan, Society for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan, World Population Federation, GreenStar Social Marketing, Bayer Schering Pharma, Child Care Association, and UNICEF Pakistan. Leading media organizations were also present at the occasion.
