BA expected to cut 2,000 jobs
LONDON, Jun 9, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) --
Company: British Airways, PLC (BAIRY)
BA, formerly British Airways, told flight crews that it would cut 2,000 jobs, offering to first reduce personnel through voluntary departures.
The airline has already trimmed more than 2,500 positions in the past year. Members of the airline's pilot union, which votes on a new contract next week, have agreed to reduce their numbers by 100, The Times of London reported Tuesday.
The pilots' contract proposal includes pay cuts and other concessions. The vote follows ground crews who voted to reject pay cuts a week ago by a wide margin.
Pilots will be voting on a reduction in paid leaves from 34 days a year to 32 and a two-year wage freeze, the newspaper said.
One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said the airline was using the recession "as an excuse to decimate the terms and conditions of thousands of BA's long-term, loyal employees."
The employee predicted BA workers would strike at some time in the summer months.
