Australia's unemployment rate rose from 5.4 per cent to 5.7 per cent in May 2009, although the jobs data highlight the growing trend toward part-time work. Some 26,200 full-time jobs were shed during the month, while 24,500 part-time jobs were created. Felicity Emmett of the Royal Bank of Scotland says more businesses appear to be reducing employees' working hours rather than shedding staff.
