SmarTrend(R) News Watch: Cisco Plans to Work with Cloud Computing Services, rather than Compete
Jul 02, 2009 (SmarTrend(R) News Watch via COMTEX) --
Companies: Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), International Business Machines Corp. (IBM)
Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) does not plan on competing with Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) cloud computing service or other pay-as-you-go services, and hopes to sell its infrastructure and other services and software to companies in the cloud market, according to a Network World report that cites CTO Padmasree Warrior. Speaking at the Cisco Live user conference in San Francisco, Warrior said that the company does not see enough opportunity in the cloud business, and is focusing on virtualization and using its own Unified Computer System as the first step towards fully virtualized data center. While competitors like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and IBM (NYSE:IBM) rush into the sale of cloud computing resources, Cisco is focusing on its strengths as a facilitator of richer collaboration between companies, where it currently has the edge as competitors try to catch up.
