Home Office UK Border Agency: Two Afghan men to be deported following a raid in Hull

Two Afghan nationals have been arrested in Hull after the UK Border Agency carried out operations against illegal working - leaving the employer facing a fine of up to GBP20,000.

Acting on intelligence, immigration officers from the UK Border Agency conducted an illegal working operation to the Top Taste Takeaway, Greenwich Avenue on Thursday 2 July.

Officers questioned those inside and checked their documents to see if they were entitled to work. The two Afghani men, aged 22 and 26, both turned out to be failed asylum seekers. They have been detained while the UK Border Agency works to remove them from the United Kingdom as soon as possible.

The restaurant was served with a notice of potential liability for employing illegal workers. The employer faces fines of up to GBP10,000 per illegal worker unless it can provide the UK Border Agency with evidence within 28 days that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.

Steve Lamb, the UK Border Agency's regional operations director in the North East, Yorkshire and The Humber, said:

'We will not tolerate illegal working, in Hull or anywhere else - it undercuts British wages, exploits vulnerable workers and hurts legitimate law-abiding businesses.

'As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. That's why we have to put a stop to employers who don't play by the rules and will seek to remove illegal workers from the UK.'

A tough new civil penalty system was brought in last year to provide a fast and effective way of tackling bosses who fail to carry out proper checks on workers from outside Europe.
