Authentec Releases Smart Sensor Solutions for Notebook PC's and Netbooks

AuthenTec, a provider of smart fingerprint solutions, announced it has introduced a family of smart sensor hardware and software solutions designed specifically for new consumer notebook PCs and netbooks.

AuthenTec said its offering includes the first product in a family of low-cost multi-function fingerprint sensors incorporating LED drivers, lighted LED packaging options, and its new TrueSuite PC client application software. This complete fingerprint solution has been optimized for Microsoft Corp.'s forthcoming Windows 7 operating system (OS), as well as the new Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) integrated within the OS.

"Our new and complete hardware, software and packaging solution underscores our commitment to consumer notebooks and the high-growth netbook segment of the PC market," said AuthenTec Chairman and CEO Scott Moody. "It also represents a new direction for the Company - leveraging the solutions we've developed as a provider of fingerprint security in commercial PCs and applying them to the consumer notebook/netbook market where we've combined enterprise-class security with ease of use, personalization and fun."

AuthenTec said its consumer notebook/netbook solution is centered around the company's new smart sensors for the PC market, including the newly introduced AES1660, and recently announced TrueSuite PC client software. The AES1660 offers the expanded functionality, biometric performance, low-power consumption, multiple packaging and form factor options, and low bill of materials (BOM) cost needed for integration into upcoming consumer notebooks and netbooks. Features include:

- Integrated LED drivers for multiple lighted LED packaging options

- TrueNav cursor and menu navigation

- Multiple battery-friendly operating modes

- Internal current limiter, voltage regulator and clock generator

- Supports USB2.0 full speed host and SPI Flash memory interfaces

- BGA packaging

- Highly integrated design enables low bill of materials cost

Authentec said the sensor incorporates programmable LED drivers supporting 24-bit resolution, or 16 million color options, offering PC manufacturers lighted LED fading, blinking and color control options that enhance PC feature discovery and the PC user experience. AuthenTec will begin sampling the new AES1660 sensor with PC OEMs during the third quarter, the company noted in a release.
