Whirlpool to close Indiana plant
BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Aug 28, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) --
Company: Whirlpool Corp. (WHR)
Whirlpool Corp. said Friday it would streamline operations and close an Evansville, Ind., manufacturing plant in mid-2010, erasing 1,100 jobs.
The company said it would shift production of top-freezer refrigerators to Mexico and production of icemakers to facilities to be determined at a later date. The Evansville Refrigeration Production Development Center is also moving to a site as yet unknown, the company said.
"This will allow us to streamline our operations, improve our capacity utilization, reduce product overlap between plants and meet future production requirements," said Al Holaday, vice president of North American Manufacturing Operations.
Whirlpool, which has 70,000 employees worldwide, said it would immediately start transition services for Evansville workers.
"This was a difficult but necessary decision," Holaday said.
