MontaVista Software, a provider of embedded Linux commercialization, said it ranks in the top 15 contributors to the Linux kernel, alongside more than 5,000 other community supporters including Red Hat, IBM and Novell, as reported by the Linux Foundation in its recent report, Linux Kernel Development.
The report indicates that MontaVista, an independent commercial embedded Linux vendor, made more than 1,500 changes to the kernel. MontaVista, now in its tenth year, is the only commercial embedded Linux vendor to rank this high in the report.
"Throughout our company history, MontaVista has always placed a strong emphasis in contributing to the Linux kernel and the entire open source community, based on our longstanding belief in Linux as an embedded operating system, and a real alternative to proprietary RTOS solutions," said Jim Ready, CTO and Founder at MontaVista. "We've contributed to the kernel in many different areas such as architecture support, power management, real-time capabilities, high performance drivers, and others. Kernel development has always been a main focus for MontaVista and will continue to be moving forward as we work with the entire Linux community to advance the development and support of Linux."
Summary of MontaVista's Key Kernel Contributions:
- MontaVista first started contributing to the kernel codeline in 2000
- Contributions to enabling broad hardware support in the Linux kernel, particularly in Power PC, ARM, and MIPS
- High number of contributions to various driver subsystems including IDE, i2c, USB, and networking among others
- Based on the report, MontaVista has submitted over 1500 kernel changes, far more than any other commercial embedded Linux vendor
