For 3G Coverage, China Unicom Targets 335 Cities at Year-end

China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, SHSE: 600050) has sped up its 3G coverage scheme in hopes of expanding its 3G services to 335 cities around China before the end of 2009, the Chinese comprehensive telecommunications carrier said lately.

At the beginning of the year, the company planned to extend its 3G trial commercialization to 284 cities in the country before the end of September 2009, and to formally start 3G commercialization in all the cities before this year-end.

Taking its improved network construction and optimization speeds into account, China Unicom additionally adds 51 cities into the previous 3G scheme. Their 3G network construction is scheduled to be completed before the end of November 2009, and their 3G network optimization before the end of December 2009. The 51 cities are situated in the seven provincial-level areas such as Jiangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, and Ningxia.
