Cepheid Developing 45 Minute Flu Test (CPHD)

9/9/2009 - Cepheid (NASDAQ:CPHD) said Wednesday it is developing a test that would confirm flu infections, which includes H1N1, in 45 minutes. The company expects to start shipping the product in January of 2010, after it receives regulatory approval. Cepheid put off other projects in order to focus on the flu test because several flu strains will be circulating in the coming months and laboratories cannot quickly tell one strain from another. The first version of the test to come out is intended to identify influenza A, including seasonal H1 and H3 types. The test would run on the company's GeneXpert System. Cepheid said it would add an influenza B test later as well as seek regulatory approval next year.
