Sep 12, 2009 (SmarTrend(R) News Watch via COMTEX) --
9/12/2009 - U.S. Cellular applied for about $23.5 million in grants from the government's broadband stimulus package because the carrier wants to expand 3G mobile broadband to rural areas in California, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. According to a FierceWireless article, the company intends to offer broadband primarily over their existing wireless network. The government has allocated a total of $7.2 billion for broadband stimulus projects as part of the $787 billion economic stimulus package passed earlier in the year. The first round of grants is supposed to be awarded this month while the rest of the money is scheduled to be allocated by September of 2010.
