Ingres CEO Examines Open Source and the State of the Software Industry

Ingres Corporation, the leading open source database management company and pioneer of the New Economics of IT, announced today that Roger Burkhardt, president and CEO of Ingres, will speak at the Jefferies 3rd Annual Technology Conference this week in New York City. Burkhardt will participate in a panel on Wednesday, September 16, from 12:30 -- 1:15 p.m. (ET) entitled "Software Industry and Market Update" where he will discuss strategies for implementing more innovative, alternative technologies, which can help companies cut costs, while maintaining security and commercial viability.

Burkhardt will be joined by Robert Farrell, CEO of Metastorm, and Chris Fedde, president and COO of SafeNet, for a discussion on where the software industry is now, and where it is headed tomorrow. As the CEO of Ingres, the world's second largest open source company, and the former CTO of the NYSE, Burkhardt brings a unique perspective to the panel and will share details on how companies can do away with big software contracts by embracing open source technologies as a more cost efficient and innovative way to manage the bottom line.

"For decades the proprietary license model has dominated the software business and industry consolidation has created a "Big Software" model that is slow, inflexible, and imposes onerous licensing costs on their customers," said Burkhardt. "Over the last five years alternative software business models have gained critical mass by offering new alternatives that put the customer back in charge. Alternative IT models have now matured across a broad range of software technologies and are being used by many customers to run mission critical workloads. These customer success stories demonstrate that it is feasible for well-led IT organizations to move to a better model. And in doing so, gain substantial cost savings and the rapid innovation benefits of a New Economics of IT."

The Jefferies 3rd Annual Technology Conference hosts a diverse group of companies in the areas of software, communications equipment, government & commercial IT services, and semiconductors. The conference is organized by sector focus and includes public and private presentations and investor meetings.
