New 3G terminal MID (Mobile Internet Device) will debut on the Chinese market by the end of 2009.
Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC; SEHK: 4335) proposed the conception of MID in April 2007 as a product falling in between smartphone and netbook.
The MID is a portable mobile PC product with a weight of fewer than 300 grams and a 4-to-10-inch display screen. It adopts Windows or Linux operating systems.
Some homegrown companies have teamed up with Intel, brewing the promotion of MIDs in China. Wuxi-based Cynovo Inc. has been selected as the preferred MID designer. The CEO of Cynovo discloses that they have so far made three MID samples and completed the design of the third-version MID sample by the end of July 2009.
MIDs support three 3G standards, namely, WCDMA, CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA as well as the technologies like Wi-Fi and bluetooth. They are also embedded with CMMB modules. Cynovo is talking with top three Chinese mobile carriers to insert their 3G value-added services into MIDs.
