Mesothelioma Awareness Day - September 26

When you tune in to your favorite radio stations on September 26th, don't be surprised to hear music by Warren Zevon, followed by a short segment about mesothelioma-- the disease that ended Zevon's life five years ago.

For several months, Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation volunteers - many of whom have been personally affected by mesothelioma - have been requesting Awareness Day proclamations through their local governments, and have been tirelessly contacting radio stations across the country requesting playtime and airtime. By and large, their wishes have been granted, positioning this year's Mesothelioma Awareness Day (http://www.curemeso.org/site/c.kkLUJ7MPKtH/b.3081255/k.DADE/Mesothelioma_Awareness_Day_2009.htm) to be the most successful mesothelioma awareness campaign to date. The event, which was started in 2005 with only a handful of radio stations participating, this year boasts Awareness Day proclamations in almost twenty cities and states, and a planned coverage by more than a hundred radio stations and newspapers.

Mesothelioma, a ruthless and incurable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, doesn't usually get press. Every year, most of the approximately 3,000 Americans newly diagnosed with mesothelioma don't know where to turn for treatment, help and information. Instead, too often, they are told by their physicians that they should get their affairs in order and prepare to die.

Bonnie Anderson, mesothelioma warrior and Meso Foundation (http://www.curemeso.org/) volunteer, says: "It is important to spread the word, to let everyone know about the viciousness of mesothelioma, but also to tell them about the resources and services available if they are ever faced with it. I have been a part of the Meso Foundation since my diagnosis and have been very grateful for their support. This is my way of giving back to the community."

Those wishing to help raise awareness about this disease can find more information about promoting "Meso Awareness Day" (http://www.curemeso.org/site/c.kkLUJ7MPKtH/b.3081255/k.DADE/Mesothelioma_Awareness_Day_2009.htm) on the Meso Foundation's website.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation is the national non-profit dedicated to finding a cure for mesothelioma by funding mesothelioma research, providing mesothelioma patients support services, and participating in federal mesothelioma advocacy.
