Since 2003, Teradata's patent-pending Maturity Assessment methodology and associated consulting service have provided business and information technology executives with a report card on the strengths and weaknesses of their data warehouse environment. The newest version is the third major enhancement and builds upon the proven methodology, which delivers a rich, comprehensive assessment for all types of data warehouse and data mart architectures. This measurement against best practices, coupled with Teradata's experienced consultants, produces a roadmap of recommendations to address gaps in data warehousing environments.
"Teradata pioneered the data warehouse maturity assessment service and continues to be the only vendor to offer this valuable critique to executives," said Stephen Brobst, chief technology officer, Teradata. "The assessment provides executives a rigorous evaluation of the data warehouse and business intelligence capability regardless of database platform."
The Teradata Maturity Assessment service evaluates critical success factors in various areas of data warehousing including business alignment, business continuity, and enterprise data management. It has been expanded in three primary ways:
-- The maturity dimensions have been updated to address emerging trends
including: operational business intelligence, service oriented
architecture deployment, and near real-time data acquisition
architectures.
-- New in-depth focus on high-availability.
-- Updated analysis capabilities for business intelligence and analytics
These enhancements help organizations evaluate top-line issues of return on investment, alignment of technology and business initiatives, governance, and the move towards enterprise-wide intelligence. They also address the bottom-line issues of poor data management, costs attributed to proliferating data marts, and the lack of effective governance to manage people, processes, and technology.
The typical assessment looks at current as well as future business objectives. This flexible assessment allows Teradata consultants to evaluate any aspect of a company's data warehouse and business intelligence infrastructure. There are ten major categories, which include more than 40 revised dimensions providing a comprehensive evaluation framework.
-- Business alignment
-- Architecture practices
-- Performance and systems management
-- Business intelligence and decision support
-- Business analytics
-- Data management
-- Data acquisition and integration
-- Business continuity
-- Communications and training
-- Program and project management
According to Brobst, "The results of a recent assessment were so compelling that the chief executive officer of a European telecommunications company stated that the maturity assessment provided a clear picture of what was needed to create a 'real' telecommunications data warehouse."
The assessment delivers several high-value items to customers including: a scorecard that shows the difference between the desired and actual maturity levels of each dimension, a prioritized set of recommendations detailing how the gaps can be closed, a comparative benchmark showing how the results compare to other implementations, and an executive presentation.
The Teradata Professional Services organization, solely dedicated to enterprise data warehousing, has distilled over 25 years of experience into its software and consulting engagements. The team includes consultants with industry-specific expertise in data warehousing strategy and implementation, as well as analytical applications. Since it was established in the early 1980s, Teradata Professional Services has offered guidance to hundreds of businesses, many of whom have been recognized throughout the industry for deploying world-class data warehouses.
