San Francisco's Sustainable Spaces Celebrates Five-year Anniversary from a 'Bus-strapped' Beginning to 1,000+ Green Energy Assessments

Sustainable Spaces, a San Francisco-based provider of home performance services, this month celebrates five years of helping homeowners and builders create healthy, energy-efficient homes through green energy remodeling.

Saving energy and money Sustainable Spaces was founded in 2004 to apply building science to bring homes up to today's high standards of comfort, health and energy efficiency. Since then, the company has received accreditation from the Building Performance Institute, making it the first home performance company in California to receive third-party verification for the quality and superiority of its work. Sustainable Spaces also was named Best Overall in the "Flex Your Power" award, and ranked 16th by the San Francisco Business Times list of the "Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies in the Bay Area."

Following an energy remodel, customers often see fast financial payback in addition to greater comfort. "We had Sustainable Spaces do an energy audit on our home due to my husband's continuing allergies and we've been very happy with the results," said Elaine Manley, a Sustainable Spaces customer from Sunnyvale, Calif. "We tried cleaning, changing bedding and curtains, working with an allergist - and still, he had trouble. Sustainable Spaces discovered that over 30% of the air in our home was coming in from the crawl space, which was full of dust, dirt and fiberglass insulation particles. My husband's health has improved greatly since the energy remodel. An added investment in solar eliminated our $350 per month energy bill."

From bus-strapped to 100% annual growth The concept for Sustainable Spaces sprung from president and founder Matt Golden's experience as an energy consultant. At the time, Matt was focused on helping homeowners and businesses develop solar systems, but recognized a greater need for understanding the house as a system and addressing the root causes of discomfort, poor indoor air quality, and energy waste. He sold his Volkswagen bus for $5,000 to help seed the company and has since attracted $6 million in Series A financing from RockPort Capital Partners and Shasta Ventures to grow the company and support the increasing customer demand. Since inception, the company has grown 100% every year and continues to hire and expand. Pratap Mukherjee, a veteran of several high-growth companies, joined as CEO to help direct Sustainable Spaces toward continued success and its next stage of growth.

"Now is an exciting time for Sustainable Spaces because our passion to encourage energy efficiency and health in homes is being met with a heightened national interest in living a greener life," said Matt Golden, founder and president, Sustainable Spaces. "The Bay Area population in particular leads the charge on a national scale with its willingness to assess and make changes for the better with its homes. The next five years will only be more exciting as our Government lends its support through the Climate Bill."
